"It was WICKED, and also Marc Shaiman's public presence last summer, no the summer before, that brought the influx of teen-agers to BWW.com, in my assessment."

-Well, all I know is that I happened to find this website in March and started posting on it and reading it because I love theater, not because of Wicked, Idina Menzel, or whatever.

It is rather insulting to me, as a 17 year old who has never posted a "I hate my parents" or "Eden Espinosa is the greatest singer of the last two centuries" thread, that people wish to exclude me from these message boards. All people are doing now is making generalizations about young adults. It seems odd to me that anyone on these boards would promote stereotyping of any kind, especially because I see so many threads about tolerance and acceptance when it comes to issues such as homosexuality. It seems hypocritical to me that people would post on a thread like that, about how unfair it is that people are so closed-minded, and then come onto this board and make closed-minded comments themselves.

It is just very disappointing to me. I will continue to come read these boards though, because I do enjoy the occasional intellectual discussion that shows up on here.

By the way, I am 17 and think I punctuate well, use excellent grammar, and spell flawlessly.

That's all I have to say. Thanks.

I would also like to point out this thread, started by a teen, that exemplifies the maturity level and excellence of some of the young people on these boards.

I don't think anyone should be a member of the adult board unless they can answer the following question:

Who stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated and bludgeoned Peter Campbell?

I'm not overly interested in a split along the arbitrary lines of age.

However, what does occur to me is that having a small fee for use of a seperate board might heighten the intent of those posting on it. That might be just enough to keep people somewhat aware of the types of posts and/or threads that they make. It's very easy to post the way some do here when it has no effect on you whatsoever - but it might be a different story if you had to pay to be a member and participate. And that doesn't necessarily have to do with age, although it would probably sort out that way simply because of purchasing logistics.

I completely agree with TheActr.

It's not fair how the mature group of teens are being treated here. On this board we have the teenie group - who you can ask them who is Cole Porter, Bernstein, Cy Coleman, Kander & Ebb, and Sondheim? And they would have no clue who they are, and what they wrote. Now there are a mature group of teens here, who love these composers, and I am one of them. It's not fair that the group of teens like myself are being thrown into the whole "teeny bopper" group. That is NOT what we are.

I don't understand why we need all these diffrent boards on a BROADWAY site. This site is suppose to be for Broadway - yes it's good to have a off topic board. But isn't making an adult board taking away from the theme of this site? Some of you keep saying you want the adult board to talk about deeper topics, well damn just talk about the deep topics here, the teenies probally wouldn't understand it anyway. I feel the whole adult forum will eventually turn into a board for porn and I don't care what Jose says, I feel that is what will happen. It's very appalling you will go through all this nonsense of making sure someone is over 21, just so you can talk about "deeper" topics. Ridiculous. If there is an adult board made, then there should be a board for the "mature teens" who are over 14, but under 21.

You know, I'm 12, as most of you know. I'm putting my two cents in just so I can state my opinion about this feud. I'm not trying to convince anyone to do anything, but I really think an adult board is a bad idea. I think it's a bad idea because with an adult board, I think some of us kids be pretty bored to death. Why? Well, I'm not one for the "OMG! WICKED!! IDINA ROOOOCKS!" threads. With the kids' board, there would be a lot of those pointless threads floating around. Namo actually has made a point in saying that sometimes the adults are the immature ones.

What I've come to realize is something I've been through. I think that some adults here think kids are just...well, kids, and they are annoying and rude, plus they complain too much. TheActr made a point too in showing the thread in which how some teenagers (and some even younger than teenagers) are mature, and some are not. I know, I know, some adults just can't keep away from saying that it's ridiculous. But there are actually kids who can actually act like adults. (Suprising, no?)

Just my two cents. Everyone else is entitled to their own opinion.

Wow. I can't believe you're 12. You act very mature! I was message boards when I was 12, but I didn't type as mature as you!

I vote no as well. Of course there are pros and cons, but no is the short answer.

If BWW charges an access fee that would eliminate many of the younger people.
And older people as well. I've never seen a board successfully go from free to paying. Usually the board just dies (which has happened to a couple of sites I used to visit). The internet is just too vast for a website to be able to successfuly charge a fee for something that people can get for free elsewhere. You could charge a fee which would allow for some special perks for the supporters...maybe a "contributors only" board or the like. Of course there's always the chance that the "OMG I luv WiCkEd!" poster will contribute.

The easiest way to let the thoughtless threads die is not reply to them. It may take a while, but people should get the drift eventually.

I'm all for Iflit's idea.

And I resent the 21 idea, because not all of us are Americans. As an Australian, we get all rights/responsibilities at 18 (eg drinking, voting, clubbing).
#88

adult board -- redux

No.

A note to the teens who enjoy being with adults: enjoy your peers and relish your age. You have the rest of your life to be adult and engage in all the adult conversation. Why hurry?

I'm sorry, but this is the perfect example of why the basis for an adult board is ridiculous. You don't like dealing with all the "OMG WICKEDISTHEBESTEVER ILUVIDINA4LIFE" threads, so you want another board where you exclude people on the basis of their age. However, there are many intelligent young adults and teens here that hate those threads/posters just as much, but you basically banish them to the kiddie table?

If they wanted to associate online only with people their own age, they'd use LiveJournal or something, but maybe they want to be able to have discussions with people who have more knowledge about theater than the kids who only know about their BFF's burned copy of the Rent cast recording.

And this is from someone who does fit into your 18-no, wait-21, category.

I vote no too, for all the reasons that have been mentioned.

I'm not huge on the idea.... I like that there is a forum for all ages where you can learn from others. I don't get terribly angry over the immature posters because this is a message board. It's not like I am being forced to live with them.

That being said, if there was an adult board, I would join, BUT not for a fee. I may be old enough, but this 20something is still poor!

I would just hate for a paying adult board to be created and take away from the atmosphere of this current board. Those of us that enjoy the adults but can't pay the fee would then be stuck!

I'm on the older end of the board's age range, and *I* wouldn't pay a fee either. Nor do I want to see rigid rules that prevent access for anyone to any board. I *am*, however, in favor of an optional third board. I don't think adults are inherently better than teens. But a case can be made that life looks different at fifty than it does at 15. I think a third board would allow the younger crowd to continue on with all the threads than some (not all) seem to love. There nothing wrong with that. I'm just saying that a lot of times I log on and see nothing but "who's hot" threads, "official love" threads, favorite toothpaste threads, and so-and-so appreciation threads... and I wonder what the hell I am doing here and disappear for a while. The dynamic has change significantly over the past two years since the majority of incoming posters have been younger rather than older. I don't WANT the toothpaste threads to stop, necessarily. I just want a place, like there used to be, where they are unlikely to occur. Personally, if there was a third "adult' board, it wouldn't bother me if someone who was not a chronological adult joined in a discussion because they had something to contribute.

I've read all the angry posts about how the young people of the board are being mistreated and how many of you see yourselves as old beyone your years and wouldn't be caught dead posting in an Idina Love Thread. I understand the tendency to view the push for a third board as an insult. I don't really think that's what it is, but I understand it to a point. But I have to tell you, by the third or fourth angry "not fair" tirade, I start to lose patience. And it becomes even clearer to me why the option of a third board on which to post is a good idea.

The Broadway community in LJ is nightmarish. If anything, I wish people would use LJ for their personal rants- that's what personal journals are for. Anyway, for those of you who are longing for a return to the good old days- maybe an age-based board is the way to do that, but I doubt it. That said, my vote is, "I don't give a crap." Try it, don't try it, whatever. We'll see what happens.

You're right, Iflit, these is no justice when the toothpaste threads lead the board and my Polident thread makes it to page three before I finish by morning prune juice.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.
