Gorgeous movie!
It really is, and it's worn its years very well. Pity about the kid who played Romeo, tho.
Pity him why?
The actor who played Mercutio played Kerensky in 'Nicholas and Alexandra'.
LOVE IT!
It's on HBO right now... I've been watching it since I woke up and saw nothing was on!
I'm watching as well Zeppy!
I remember sobbing my way through this in the theater as a 16 year old in LOVE. I don't think I ever identified (or perhaps OVER-identified) with any film than much since. Thought my heart would break. And had a total crush on Romeo. (Did something bad happen to him, SeanMartin?)
Gorgeous!

I remember when it first came out (was it in the late 60's). The theme song was extremely popular. At the beach that summer every transistor radio seemed to be tuned to the same station and Ferrante and Teicher's (or was it Roger Williams?) rendition of "A Time For Us" seemed to float up from the sand.

I absolutely adore this film. Michael York's performance as Tybalt is a joy to behold! (As is the whole movie, of course!)
I have no idea what SeanMartin is referring to, though. Leonard Whiting (Romeo) is alive and well, with two children, and apparetnly is currently a composer and an author of children's books.
Oh, and the movie came out in 1968. I saw it for the first time in English class, about 20 years later.
Transistor radios. I haven't thought about them in ages. And they were the definitive portable connection to the outside world at the time...
I saw this in the movie in the theatre as a teenager on a re-release (I was 13 or 14 years old).
It's the first time Shakespeare's language started to make sense to me. Even though the text is severely edited, I still think it's one of the best (if not THE best) attempts at Shakespeare on film.
And those two kids are completely beautiful! I love that they're actually the right ages for the characters. She's 15 and he's 17.
Perhaps Sean was referring to the fact that Leonard Whiting wasn't able to retain his youthful beauty. Strange how that happens.
Whiting turns 57 this month.
Here's a pic from 2004
He actually didn't retain his beauty past 20, though.
He only looked that "pretty" for about a year before things went south.
I wouldn't call it a human tragedy though. At least Zefferelli captured him at the right moment, in the right part, at the right age.
And he's gorgeous in the film.

Well, I have to say, that's just so shallow that it didn't even occur to me. I assumed a "pity" would have been referrring to a death, or illness, or some tragedy in his life, not that the guy didn't stay "hot." Jeez. :-P

"...that's just so shallow..."
Ya think?
That was the only think I could think he meant by "real shame." I hope I'm not "falsely accusing." It's an assumption that's what he meant.
I don't know of any "real shame"... except that he got messed up with drugs and alcohol for a while.
...and he's short.

With the right hairstyle Whiting would still look good.

Here's a pic of him and Oliva Hussey from about 10 years ago. Just for the heck of it.

Dolly: I agree! That hair is the major problem in the pic b12b posted.
b12b: Oh, I think you're probably right, it just honestly didn't occur to me. So I was googling him to see what horrible fate had befallen the man! lol

About 15 years ago, I saw Olivia at Hoy's Wok up on Sunset and La Brea, waiting in line for take-out one day with her son.
I seriously had one of my (very few) real star-struck moments.
She looked exactly the same as she did in Romeo & Juliet. I couldn't take my eyes off of her, she was so beautiful. She has (had?) aged VERY well.
This is a bit more recent. And a bit more "combed."
I think he's looking pretty good now, for an old guy.

Whiting always seems to have had a high forehead. That's probably why he wore bangs in ROMEO AND JULIET. Of course now, it's more pronounced.
And yes, we "old guys" have to take care of ourselves.
