one of the most-underrated movie musical sequels (or is it the ONLY movie musical sequel besides GREASE 2 and possibly DIRTY DANCING: HAVANA NIGHTS and possibly STAYING ALIVE)?
i want to get through it prior to SNL tonight and then catch some beauty sleep (yeah, more like a beauty coma needed) for the Oscar festivities tomorrow.
Thanks, BWWers, for the best most stimulating part of my Saturday, otherwise spent running errands in the rain amidst the Houston traffic.
Even when i grapple with some of you, i love this place and treasure those with the wit and/or intelligence to post so provocatively.
How Lucky Can You Get, Txtwostep?
Don't forget to rub your elbows with lemons when you go to bed as you sing "Isn't This Better"...
it was SO MUCH better than i remembered...it actually has an overture, even if that is filled with glamor shots of La Barbra.
The lemon slices are actually prior to "Isn't this Better", because they have the pajama fight/nosebleed and end up making love, for which Babs must pause and sing to his sleeping form, insert a little loving but catty yet mothering dialogue in the bridge, and then take the song home with an upward modulation. All while showing her lovely hands roaming his manly body, even as he reclines on her lap like the Pieta. The fact that she makes something so preposterous work----now THAT'S talent, ladies and gentlemen.
Besides, "Lucky Can You Get" and "Better" it has three other great Kander/Ebb songs (among the older classic Billy Rose songs):
BLIND DATE
HEAR IT FOR ME
SO LONG HONEY LAMB
and let us pause for a moment and reflect on what a truly great musical star Caan could have been. Handsome, virile, okay singing voice, okay dancer (as also seen in the underrated FOR THE BOYS film). Sexy as hell and a great actor. Too bad someone didn't offer him the stage or film role where he was the singing lead, as opposed to the support for the recording artists Streisand and Midler.
I LOVE this movie. It has some of my favorite Streisand songs, such as the aforementioned "Isn't This Better?" and the beautiful and extremely sad "If I Love Again". Also, it features the famous black dress (in "How Lucky Can You Get") - gorgeous! I also really like "Great Day" and "More Than You Know" - great tunes and great performances from Barbra. Yes- this movie is definitely underrated!!
I agree about James Cann. Well, at least he got to sing and dance with two of the best - that's more than a lot of others can say.
