‘Two Strangers’ Review: Meeting Cute, Toting Baggage

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) Is a Little Sweet, a Little Spongy
'Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),' an oddball British musical by Barne and Buchan, is charming but feels underscale for Broadway.

TWO STRANGERS (CARRY A CAKE ACROSS NEW YORK): The Great British Millennial-Off — Review
https://www.theatrely.com/post/two-strangers-carry-a-cake-across-new-york-the-great-british-millennial-off-review
"I felt a disorienting generational whiplash throughout the treacly rom-com Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). The latest British musical to make it through that country’s off-off ranks and onto our shores, it follows two 20-somethings during a whirlwind wedding weekend in present-day New York. And yet it fundamentally misunderstands Gen Z, is shot through with elder Millennial sensibility, and had a mostly older crowd wiping tears of laughter from their eyes. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy it, so congrats to all involved, but let me submit my dissenting opinion anyway."

BROADWAY REVIEW: ‘Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across NY’ is cute but too long
https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/11/20/broadway-review-two-strangers-carry-a-cake-across-ny-is-cute-but-too-long
"Stories with odd couples on the edge of Eros, so to speak, can be very effective (see the movie “Lost in Translation” or the musical “The Band’s Visit“) but if writers choose to have their couple get naked and hit the sheets, in this case at the Plaza Hotel, since we’re all about New York aspiration here, they struggle to know where to go. So while this show held me for Act One with its considerable charm, by Act Two, it was hitting turbulence. 90 minutes and out would have been a better plan."

"Tutty’s co-star in the two-hander, Christiani Pitts, is lovely as the Brooklyn-born city dweller who picks him up at JFK. Chemistry is essential here, and the well-cast pair blindingly spark. But the truth is that Tutty is not only carrying a cake, but an entire show."

A Yank and a Brit share an unforgettable few days in the Big Apple in the new musical rom-com.

"“Two Strangers” is funny in places, occasionally moving in others, and just a little off-feeling throughout, as if it is trying too hard to charm across the storytelling and whimsy chasms it creates for itself. Its flaws are not fatal, thanks to the singing skills, charm, and likeability of Pitts and Tutty who generate the right kind of tricky, rather than star-crossed, chemistry. (Can and should a would-be step-aunt and nephew really get together?)"
Getting the cold shoulder, it seems.
DTLI Consensus: Funny and smartly constructed in places, and well-acted by Sam Tutty and Christiani Pitts, Two Strangers makes for a sweet — if unsatisfying — dessert of a musical.

Well, I think until we get more shows, this is probably the frontrunner for Best Musical.
This is a kind of show that Olekinski at the Post HATES, so for him to heap any praise, however faint, is actually quite shocking. Maybe he does have a heart after all.
I’m a little disappointed that the reviews are mixed, but the trend is at least more toward the positive. That Critic’s Pick might be helpful, especially as the holidays approach.

The most helpful thing for this show is its low running costs.
This one is critic proof. It's on its way to being a hit and making Tutty a U.S. star. The role & his performance is the most interesting of men in musicals this season so far - our Tony front runner for Lead Actor (and we loved Henry). Tutty just holds this show up with more stage time and 90 minutes ranging from adorably comedic to heart breaking drama.

Considering there may only be 3 new musicals on Broadway this season, “front runner” isn’t really a thing. They’re all giving a very light jog.

AHA! I stand corrected.
Last night I learned how important that Critic's Pick is. I ate at the bar of a busy place and got talking to the couple next to me who were on their way to Chess while I was heading to OM. They were asking how I planned my trip, & somehow Queen of V came up. I said with only 6 days what was most important to me was not wasting my time, and that I had bought a ticket but bailed on that. The wife was like "But it's a NY Times Critic's Pick!" I said but that's almost the only good review it got. She can get free tickets through her work. I said hey for free & you live here so you can go whenever, sure go. The husband was like bit if it's lousy it's still wasting our time. He told me the very best show I needed to see was Dead Outlaw and I had to break it to him that it closed a few months back.
I don't think you all who live here quite appreciate what a special place your city is. I just kind of quietly mentioned to the bartender that I was visiting from Canada & next thing everyone sitting at the bar wanted to talk to me. That would not happen other places.

I have loved Tutty in this production since I saw it in Kilburn. But please. Josh Henry is and will remain the front runner till he wins. And as silly as Chess is, Nicholas Christopher performing Endgame alone beats Tutty in performance!

I don't think this is critic proof. The reviews will guide people to what they are willing to spend on a cute two person show. The producers are smart and will need to keep advertising and promoting at a reasonable price point so that audiences leave happy with what they spent on a small delightful show. And while Sam is making a nice splashy debut Josh is bringing down the house. Both great performances.
