This really doesn't fit into any specific "Wicked" thread, but I feel the need to share it anyway.
I was in Washington, DC for the last 3 days and I visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Highlight of the trip? Seeing Dorothy's original ruby slippers on display :) So cool. An interesting fact written on the display was that there were a few pairs made for the movie, and the ones on display were used in the yellow brick road scenes because the bottoms were covered in felt so they would muffle the noise of Dorothy's dancing.
It also said they were originally supposed to be silver, but technicolor had just come about so the production team wanted a bright color. (ooh here's something related to theatre!) --> In "The Wiz", I believe the slippers are silver, correct?
Just thought I'd share...:)

i saw them too when i went to d.c.! i was like 'I WANT THEM!!' lol.
ya know, everytime i went, the shoes were taken out to be a part of a touring museum... EVERYTIME... and i'd miss them by like, a week. i was very upset.
I've seen them a couple of times...I live pretty close so I go to D.C. with friends sometimes

I do believe, if my memory serves me correctly, that the most expensive piece of movie memorbilia is Clark Gable's Gone With the Wind script, but the ruby slippers may have topped it. I'm too lazy to look it up.
I realized when I saw them ratty old shoes a few weeks ago why DC is such a gay city. We all congregate here (whether we know it or not) because the shoes of Judy live here, too.

and there is NOTHING wrong with that
I love Judy. And her shoes.
They sell little girl shoes that look just like ruby slippers at Target, and I'm sad that I'm too big to fit into them now.
I hope you're a female, NameinLights!
I hope I am too! No I am, no need to be alarmed!

my mom got me a pair of sequined red heels in New Orleans since I don't fit in the little girl ones anymore, so don't worry MyNameInLights! There's hope for you yet.
It is also a dream of mine to own a pair one day. I think there are like 8 or something out there. I believe Disney owns one.
There are 3 pairs. And I think it's disgusting when "People" own things like that. Those are things that belong in museums for people to see.
My friend Zel bought a pair of glass slippers once.
I mean, I think they're actually vinyl and lucite, but the'yre clear and super cool.
They hurt a lot, but it's worth it for cool shoes, right?
And Matt_G, I totally agree with that.

I didn't say I wouldn't leave them in a museum for everyone's enjoyment. I would just love to be the person who officially owns them. I've adored Thw Wizard of Oz since I was a little girl, and it's always been a dream of mine. It's not like I'd keep them in a safe in my apt or anything! Don't worry Matt .... I'll let you come try them on!
The slippers in The Wiz were silver. Just like the ones in the original book.

hehe I have my slippers from when I did the show.
I've done the show a few times so they've fallen apart.
But don't mess with red sequins on a string and a glue gun!!!
You should read the book "The Search For The Ruby Slippers". It's all about the 1970 MGM auction, the history of the shoes, how many pairs were made, the guy that led the great Hollywood costume raid (stealing classic costumes because they were being trashed by the studios), etc. Full of intrigue and dish and general fun stuff.

another interesting fact, teh coat that Professor marvel wore in the film actualy belonged to Frank Baum and it wasn't discovered until filming began....
Honey you don't want me trying on those shoes. My feet are enormous. They would rip them to pieces and than I would have every queen in the world coming after me wanting blood.

hmmmm... enormous feet......
