my dad calls shows like Wicked plays and it drives me crazy!i tell him its a musical and he says its the same thing.is he right?
It bugs me as well when people call plays musicals and vice versa.
do either of you have REAL life issues that you deal with?
sorry this seems SO trivial
I KNEW IT! i hate it and then he calls rehersals-practice and auditions-tri outs and intermition-1/2 time!
UGG!
Liam, honey. Relax. It's going to be okay.
(The half-time one always makes me laugh, though.)
funny?im inbarised to be in theaters with people that dont know what they are talking about
A musical is a play with music. It is a script PLAYED out on a stage. It is not incorrect to call a musical a play.
And rehearsals ARE practice. And auditions ARE try-outs. The half-time thing is just funny, though.
thank you rath, the voice of reason prevails! A musical is always a play, but a play is not always a musical!
It's okay.
So does this mean that we should call half-time intermission?
That would be funny.
It's something I'd do just to make my brother upset.
The last time I was watching a Football game I did that, the sports people find that as funny as theatre people find the reverse.
I didn't so it on purpose.
Once again though, since the intermission is halfway (approximately) through the play, if there are only two acts then half time would not be unacceptable.
Just as Half time is in fact an intermission.
Hockey has intermission, twice, since they have 3 "acts"
as a theatre geek, i am ashamed to say that i in fact HAVE called an intermission a 'half-time' whooopsy..

Liam, instead of fretting over trivial matters, why don't you focus your attention on doing something about your spelling?
Liam...do what I do..when you go to a sports game just call 1/2 time INTERMISSION....see how that pisses sports fans off,
When I was playing softball this Fall for the first time EVER (me not so much into sports) I kept on calling practice 'rehearsal.' Not on purpose...

Liam, if I were to bite anything it would be a nice piece of sirloin. Why would I want to put anything as wearisome as you between my teeth?
You're a mere pipsqueak who should do something about his spelling problem.

What really bugs me is when high school kids say "I have to go to play practice." I usually respond, "Does that interfere with football rehearsal?"
Seriously - as to the play/musical thing, we have a "theatre critic" at the local newspaper who will write a review of a musical, call it a "play", and never mention the fact that there is singing, dancing, or an orchestra!
It doesn't matter, a musical is a play, but with music. So it can be called that.
It's like calling an apple a fruit... kind of? lol.
I do understand where you are coming from, but definetly not a huge deal.
