I think Friedman will win - but it will really come down to Friedman and LuPone.

It might boil down to the Tony committee's ruling, I will give you that. But it is all about the music that's involved - which involves her performance - I could see it falling into either category.

I believe Chita's show counts as a Special Event instead of a Musical so she would not be eligible for a nomination. I agree that LaChanze, LuPone, and Friedman have a place in this category already. Perhaps Benanti and O'Hara will follow, I dont know. I don't believe it will come down to Friedman and LuPone, instead in my opinion, it will be between LuPone and LaChanze. I think LuPone has the biggest chance to win because she completely re-invented Mrs.Lovett which many people didn't expect due to her more traditional performance of the role in the concert versions.
"Souvenir" is considered a play with music, therefore, Judy Kaye will indeed be nominated, but in the Best Actress in a play category and will most likely win.

*Lowers his head in shame* I must accept I have not had the pleasure of seeing Ms.LuPone's performance in person, my prediction was merely based from all the reviews I have read but as Margo said earlier, critics do not give the Tony's. I just believe that if LuPone's performance is as great as I've read/heard, and if on top of everything she plays in the orchestra, works as stagehand, and sings in the chorus, she will most likely get recognized for it.

What about I Love you Because? Isn't that a musical opening on Broadway? I wonder if they have any female leads, isn't Stephanie D'Abruzzo one? Well there's another for the list if she has a lead on broadway with this show. HOw many are we up to?

Jenn Gambatese could maybe get a nomination for Tarzan. No one has mentioned her, but I liked the treatment of the character a lot in the Disney film. Brainy, but funny.

.....my money is on LuPone. While critics don't actually have a choice in the Tony nods, they do influence the decision. She has gotten fabulous reviews and I would bet that its between her and Maria.

I find it impossible to judge who will win, but the spots for Lupone, Freidman and LaChanze seem assured.

The other two may depend on outside factors; ie will someone push Sutton as lead because of her name or will they try to get a win in Featured, will Jenn's role be seen as "beefy" enough for a nom, the same for Carolee (actually both of those). Benanti, O'Hara, and Falco are even more in the "wild card" category.

I agree that producers are more likely to promote Sutton to win the Best Featured Actress in a Musical category because from what I've heard, she doesn't have a starring role in "The Drowsy Chaperone." I was thinking about it, and now I believe Friedman has a much higher chance to win because it is the first time she is eligible for a Tony (and her performance was singled out as excellent in all the reviews). However, LaChanze's performance has great buzz.

I really hope La Chanze wins. She was amazing in TCP when I saw it Saturday.

I thought Patti was wonderful in ST as well, but La Chanze deserves it.

McDonald's 4 Tonys are for:

Featured Actress in a Musical (Carousel, Ragtime)
Featured Actress in a Play (Master Class, A Raisin in the Sun)

She's never won a Lead Tony for either a Musical or a Play.
