Dang. No Douglas Hodge. I was banking on this to be where he gets some recognition.
No Boyd Gaines either.
At least they remembered Michael Shannon.

My heart wants Donna Murphy to get it as she made the role her very own. It was a remarkable performance.
I think Vanessa Redgrave, Fiona Shaw, Alan Cumming, Tracy Letts and Amy Morton are highly likely possibilities.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 11:25amHer role is awfully small, though. Cumming and Shaw carry their shows. Morton and Letts received incredible reviews. I think Martin is a dark horse.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 11:45amI feel like HARDBODY should have taken that MOTOWN spot.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 11:48amI feel like Chaplin or A Christmas Story should have taken the Motown spot.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 11:50amI really would love to see A CHRISTMAS STORY get a Best Musical nomination. I'm not ashamed to say it was probably my favorite new musical I saw this season.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 11:51amI hope this is a sign the Matildas will be deemed inelligible for the Tony's since the Billys were nominated back in 2009. Also many nominators may feel unlike Billy which was a role that would be difficult for any actor to do physically 6 let alone 8 times a week due to the extreme dancing elements of the show, 3 performances a week was enough, but Matilda is not as "demanding" and it was the producers who chose to have 4 actresses play a role instead of one that could have easily been shared by 2 or 3 girls.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 11:57am^ I believe there's a rule that only two actors from a show may be nominated, but I'm not positive.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 12:02pmI'll second Letts, Cumming, Shaw and Martin as contenders, and also throw out Kristine Nielsen and Bertie Carvel. After all, if we're putting Martin in the running, Nielsen and Carvel are much bigger parts who have gotten just as much (if not more) praise in their respective corners.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 12:05pmThis award typically goes to someone showy with a ton of credits. My money is on Nathan Lane for The Nance.

I say Redgrave is the leading contender for the ladies-she is a living legend and hasn't won.
Lane for the men seems plausible.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 12:25pmI doubt enough people saw The Revisionist for her to win.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 12:28pmAlan Cumming all the way. It's such a showy performance and the kind of performance a theater person can appreciate.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 12:36pmSorry to show my ignorance here, but I'm not as familiar with the Drama League's as I am with the Tonys, and I was surprised to see that they just have one acting category. Why is that? I feel like the reason the Tonys have different categories for acting is to avoid pitting apples against oranges, so to speak. It seems like it would be so much more difficult to pick one actor as the best out of 60.

I was going to give Geoffrey Rush as an example of this not being completely true, since he won in 2009 for Exit the King, his Broadway debut, but that's an argument one could easily poke holes in. Maybe someone like Norbert Leo Butz winning for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a better example.

Yah but Norbert was hailed as a revelation who picked up every other award that season (similar to Ebersole for Grey Gardens the year after).
Enough people saw her to nominate her, so why wouldn't they be able to cast their vote for her?
Nominating committees and voters are different things. Anyone who is a Drama League member gets to vote, and all it takes to be a member is a membership fee. I am a member, so I get to vote every year. And because these aren't all industry people, not everyone makes the trek downtown to see smaller work. I'm not saying she doesn't deserve it, but I doubt enough people will vote for her.

Posted: 4/23/13 at 1:15pmFair enough, although I still think she's an outside possibility. I think Cicely Tyson cannot be counted out either. Nathan Lane does seem to lead for the men (why did I think he won for The Producers?).

Interesting thar McClure is nommed and not Carolee.
If there was a way to honor her, this was it.
