WEST SIDE STORY info:
Cheyenne Jackson & Alexandra Silber, principal soloists; Jack Vad, producer (Leonard Bernstein, composer; Stephen Sondheim, lyricist) (Cheyenne Jackson & Alexandra Silber With The San Francisco Symphony)
The rest of the nominees don't surprise me! I would've thought IF/THEN would've slipped in there somewhere...

ALADDIN, GENT'S GUIDE and HEDWIG are gorgeously produced albums. They sound fantastic. BEAUTIFUL didn't surprise me in the slightest, perfect selection for the larger Grammy voting body. I haven't heard this WEST SIDE STORY recording so I'm excited to dive in!
Sad for VIOLET and LADY DAY, as those albums are tremendous as well, but not very surprised.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Violet was such a wonderful album, bummer.

It was a great year for cast albums and, Broadway-wise, nearly every musical received one except for Soul Doctor, if I'm not mistaken.

After Midnight also didn't get a cast album.
Happy that Gentleman's Guide got a nomination, as well as the new West Side Story album.

West Side Story has won best album like 3 times already. I still rank the 2009 version the best. I love the spanish lyrics.
I can't believe A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder got nominated; the music is so bland. I only like "Foolish to Think" & "I've Decided to Marry You" (only because that's the only song they perform in events and it's catchy)
I'd love to see any of the nominees win over GG. Beautiful or Aladdin for the win please.

The Grammy people love West Side Story.
Yeah if the Gentleman's Guide album wins I'll be pissed. It *should* go to Beautiful, but I'd put money on Hedwig.

As soon as I saw that the concert version of "West Side Story" was on the list, I knew this category was done. I don't think most of the people who vote on the cast album category even listens to the albums. They just look at the list, find a familiar title, and vote for that.

So I guess non-Broadway albums can be nominated. I swear they changed the rule sometime that only Broadway cast albums were eligible for this (an absurd rule).
Hopefully they just vote for the Best Musical Tony winner again so GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE can win!

I love the GENTLEMEN'S GUIDE album, but I'm rooting for the BEAUTIFUL cast recording to win. I think it's one of my all-time favorite cast recordings, the cast does such a beautiful job with the music, and the record itself sounds great and perfectly captures the energy of the show.

Just because individual recordings of WEST SIDE STORY have won in the past doesn't mean a new recording of it can't be worthy of an award. This isn't an award for Best Show, it's for Best Musical Theatre Album. It's about the recording, not just the show.

Have you guys even listened to this WSS recording? It's incredible with some of the best sung renditions of each character and arguably the best orchestral performance recorded of this score. And it was recorded live with the sound quality of a studio recording. It's a slam dunk.
That said, I'm said for the absence of Bridges and Here Lies Love in this category. Those and WSS were my favorite albums this year.

Why do they even still have this category? They don't know how to vote for it.
Sure they do! They vote the same way they vote for the other categories. Highest grossing album wins.

Congrats to all of these shows! I'm rooting for "Beautiful".
A bit off topic, but congratulations to Ariana Grande (She was in "13") on her two nominations.

I cannot believe Bridges wasn't nominated. One of the most gorgeous and perfectly made cast albums I've ever heard. I just don't get the Beautiful cast album love - I love the show but that album has WAY too much dialogue on it. There are so few complete songs. Pisses me off.

I too was surprised by the West Side Story nom. Alexandra Silber and Cheyenne Jackson are marvelous, but its SF Symphony status made me think it was ineligible. Oh well. Shows how much I know about Grammy criteria.
For some reason I thought "Here Lies Love" would be a dark horse somewhere, but I guess I was waaaay off...Lol...
