This right here is the real debate in this Best Actor race. There’s no denying that Slater was the most critically acclaimed of the four. There’s also very little denying that he’s giving the best performance of the four. However, do we think a yellow sea sponge is a character worthy of a lead actor Tony? The Tonys have shown previously that they are not afraid to give Tonys out to fun roles (Heck, they gave Christian Borle two of them). However, we have never seen this kind of a role win in Leading before. This is why I’m buying that if Slater loses Best Actor but the committee wants to show some SpongeBob love, then Lee will win for Featured.

Squids are more palatable than sponges after all.

This is interesting. I agree that the committee might want to recognize the show in some way like with one win as your suggesting instead of a sweep (as I believe the sweep will be for The Band's Visit). But I think Spongebob has a better chance of getting best director as their saving grace instead of best supporting actor. Tina Landau has been getting great reviews for her innovative vision of spongebob and has been called the Julie Taymor for Nickelodeon Theatricals so this might be the category where they honor spongebob.

However, giving them sound design and set design is enough love in my opinion. Looks like the could end up like Come From Away (only winning best director) Great Comet (only come technical awards) or Something Rotten (only best supporting). Or some completely different out come, this is just speculation.

I'm not sure if the fact that Ethan Slater is playing a sponge is as big of a deal as some are making it out to be. To me, the more discriminating factor is that Ethan Slater is playing the main character of a big, giant franchise.

If the voters want to award Slater, they will. Him playing a sponge has nothing to do with it.

They given awards to a Genie and Snoopy .

I sssume this ceremony is closed to the public? I’ll be in town that week and would love to go, but I can’t find a way to get tickets.

Thrilled for Ambrose, but I thought Hadden-Paton was absolutely brilliant. I'm seeing SpongeBob in a few weeks, so if Slater is more of a standout in his role than Harry, I am very excited to see this.

I’m also so happy Spongebob got Best Musical. It’s just too bad that it’s BAND’S VISIT’s year. I would have loved a show down between the two shows that I loved so much. Mean Girls, a funny and biting show vs. Spongebob, a complete joyfest

So happy for all of the Spongebob love, especially Ethan, and Lauren Ambrose!

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

''I assume this ceremony is closed to the public? I’ll be in town that week and would love to go, but I can’t find a way to get tickets.''

Yes, the Outer Critics Circle dinner isn't open to the general public. It's only for OCC members and the winners/guests.

And this affair at Sardi's (upstairs) sold out within a couple of days.
