There’s also very littledenying that he’s giving the best performance of the four. However, do we think a yellow sea sponge is a character worthy of a lead actor Tony? The Tonys have shown previously that they are not afraid to give Tonys out to fun roles (Heck, they gave Christian Borle two of them). However, we have never seen this kind of a role win in Leading before. This is why I’m buying that if Slater loses Best Actor but the committee wants to show some SpongeBob love, then Lee will win for Featured."
This is interesting. I agree that the committee might want to recognize the show in some way like with one win as your suggesting instead of a sweep (as I believe the sweep will be for The Band's Visit). But I think Spongebob has a better chance of getting best director as their saving grace instead of best supporting actor. Tina Landau has been getting great reviews for her innovative vision of spongebob and has been called the Julie Taymor for Nickelodeon Theatricals so this might be the category where they honor spongebob.
However, giving them sound design and set design is enough love in my opinion. Looks like the could end up like Come From Away (only winning best director) Great Comet (only come technical awards) or Something Rotten (only best supporting). Or some completely different out come, this is just speculation.
