2018 Tony Eligibility Rulings, Round #3

https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Tony-Awards-Decide-Eligibility-for-FROZEN-ANGELS-IN-AMERICA-1984-THREE-TALL-WOMEN-More-20180412

Biggest takeaways:

Both Levy and Murin are considered for Lead Actress in a Musical.

Both Metcalf and Pill are considered Featured Actress in a Play.

Nathan Lane will be considered for Featured Actor in a Play.

They're no longer excluding 1984 from the Tonys.

Metcalf being considered Featured just made things very interesting. But I still think Gough will take it.

Good move for Nathan Lane to be put in featured. He'll totally win and rightfully so. It's the best performance of his career.

Do we think 1984 might get a best play nomination?

Also the Metcalf vs Gough race will be interesting.

I would think it would get nominated over Meteor Shower. (If the other nominees are Potter, Junk, and The Children.)

Metcalf and Gough is interesting. Gough will still win.

I hope McArdle gets nominated - and gives Lane a run for it. Found him the more interesting of the two (so did the Oliviers) Does Mean Girls eligibility comes with the next round then?

Wonder if Disney even tried petitioning Caissie to featured. Now that she’s officially lead I wonder if she will even be nominated.

So I’ve never followed these committee decisions so I’m just a bit confused. I didn’t see anything about Nathan Lane? How do you know that he is being considered for featured. Also I’m guessing HP is going to be determined in the next round?

Lane is below the title in the Angels playbill, and everybody under the title is considered for Featured performances. These rulings announcements designate the exceptions (or, who's considered for Leading instead).

HP doesn’t have rulings since it hasn’t opened. Technically nobody is above the title for Angels which makes them all Featured. Andrew was singled out since he’s the lead, but not above the title (which is strange).

I feel like if any of the Frozen ladies can get into Leading Actress it's Patti. Patti got better reviews overall and was called out by several publications including the Times.

I’m glad Caissie and Patti are both Lead and REALLY hope they both get nominated! In the Playbill Caissie is billed first and equally with Patti, so a petition seems like it would’ve been a hard sell anyway, but they are both undoubtedly co-stars!

Re: Lane, unless an announcement is made at these rulings, anyone above the title in the billing is considered lead and under is considered featured. Lane and Garfield are both under the title in the official billing, but they only made a special ruling on placing Garfield in lead.

Like the second announcement, the third one does not mention The Parisian Woman. I guess it did not invite anybody.

I agree - McArdle's performance really stuck with me more out of the two of them.

Also worth noting that none of the actors in Lobby Hero are above the title, which means Michael Cera is considered featured - which is very surprising to me. Definitely seemed like a leading role to me.

So we're still waiting on Harry Potter, Mean Girls, Carousel, Summer, My Fair Lady, Iceman Cometh, Children of a Lesser God, and Saint Joan? Am I missing any?

EDIT: Fixed, thanks Smaxie. Personally, though, I think "My Fairy Lady" sounds like a more fun show.

>My Fairy Lady<

Later, they changed that title to Cinderella.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Or there was no reason to petition it. It’ll be considered a new play, and Uma will be considered for Leading Actress as she was above the title.

I think Metcalf would be a stronger contender if she hadn’t just won. It could still happen, but my money is on Gough.

What I mean is each announcement lists at the beginning which productions were discussed at the meeting. Neither this announcement nor the previous one included The Parisian Woman in the list, which suggests the committee never even discussed it.

Maybe the nominator who missed it during its Broadway run was able to catch it through the New York Public Library.

The omission of The Parisian Woman in the original release was an error that has since been corrected. You can see the updated version here:

But Springsteen still wasn't made eligibile.

I have no clue what this could possibly mean. Pull his shows from what? The Tonys? Think through that for a minute.

Does anyone know if Lobby Hero would be eligible for Best Play? It's been around for quite some time like Three Tall Women and there are many saying Three Tall Women would be eligible for Best Revival of a Play.
