Based on what I’m seeing on Twitter, this wasn’t a gag and did actually happen last night.
Was anyone at the performance or know how Aaron ended up coming back for the night?

What do you mean a gag? This wasnt a late April Fools joke. People were posting audio clips on social media within hours of the performance ending
Anyone know why he was brought in for one performance?
Presumably, because they didn't have anyone else who could cover the role. It's a holiday weekend and I know other shows are short on swings due to either illness or vacations.

Aaron is a professional who's done the show hundred of times. In the opera world, it's common for a singer who's never even performed in a particular production to jump in with little/no rehearsal beyond a basic pre-curtain walk-through.
He was reached, he was available, he’s done the show countless times so he knows the technical aspects of the blocking, extra money, car service provided including dinner. Only an idiot would decline this one performance offer.

Only a few weeks ago, Aaron Tveit told Good Housekeeping: ''I'm totally open to coming back [to 'Moulin Rouge!'] at another time and I hope the show continues to run and have success.'' Tveit also said that his Broadway experience had informed his TV work in ''Schmigadoon!,'' and gave him more confidence to ''push myself, vocally and emotionally.'' (I'm still hoping ''Moulin Rouge!'' does some kind of motion-capture that includes Tveit's Tony-winning performance.)

I wondered how hard that would be to fill in on short notice for one performance. It seems from what you are saying that it is no big deal. What a nice surprise for the audience that had tickets to that show, wish I could be that lucky !!
