Actually Wishing, I was about to say that I never said they never nominate ANY big commercial shows, but the Best Musical category is always very balanced...you cite Mary Poppins as an example....what were the other nominees? Curtains, Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening...what was missing? The Pirate Queen and Legally Blonde -- 2 of the bigger shows that season. They do nominate big shows and the big show this year is B.E. I will be genuinely surprised if they find room for both 9 to 5 and Shrek considering there are 3 other shows with better reviews.

"Rock Of Ages" isn't attracting many types of people, really only one type, and I highly doubt "Shrek" will be nominated. But, "9 to 5" has very big names both seen onstage and behind the scenes attached to it in the Broadway and Hollywood community. Chances are that, that, all the drama desk nominations, and the name of the show itself will get it a best musical slot. Not to mention it has been one of the most anticipated shows of the season. The TONYS voters will not ignore things like that.
I think a lot of the criticisms are fair but what sticks out at me is how scattered they are in what they pinpoint. For some, Mantello's direction helps drive the show forward, while for others it is frantic; Blankenbueler's (sp?) choreography is distracting for one or exciting and complimentary for another.
I think this underscores that the show could be stronger, but you have to see for yourself what your reaction is. I thoroughly enjoyed the show in L.A. and would love to see it again, though I understand why the reaction is mixed for others.
I am very happy for the cast, however, who shine on that stage and are getting the recognition they deserve. They capture the joy of the show, which is what I remember most when I think about
it. I am especially happy for SJB who seems to me like an unsung hero (I know that may seem weird on this board, but it's just a general perception). That AP review with the "Best of all is Block" line will be all over the web!
I wish the show the best and hope the cast lets loose tonight and feel the love.
It really baffles me how 9 TO 5 can get mediocre reviews like this and ROCK OF AGES gets a rave from the Times.
The scary thing is, if the rest of the reviews follow suit with the ones posted so far, ROCK OF AGES will have gotten better reviews than 9 TO 5 and could quite possibly steal SHREK's spot. SHREK is a masterpiece compared to ROA, as is 9 TO 5.
*ducks and covers to avoid the ROA groupies*

Wishing, it doesnt matter at this point what Tony voters think (heck, I'm a Tony voter!)...what matters is what the members of the Nominating Committee think

Ok, the nominating committee... my post still applies.
I personally want 'next to normal' to win being I feel that's the only way it will survive on Broadway but '9 to 5' sure as hell deserves a "BEST MUSICAL! 2009 TONY Nominee!"
The show started right before 7:00pm. I think I should know considering that I'm here watching it WishingOnlyWounds2.

Well, it was being publicized as a 6:30 curtain.
Opening nights always start late.
Well, WishingOnlyWounds2, sweetie, if you've ever been to an Opening Night, you would know that the show usually starts at least a half hour past the time on your ticket.
The early curtain time is to allow press to do their thing with the stars entering.

Well, sweetie, you can't blame me for saying a show is going to start when I'm just repeating the time on the ticket.

Congratulations on being a condescending ****foster.
USA Today combined the accessible Godot and the absurd 9 to 5
Accessible 'Godot,' absurd '9 to 5' round out Broadway season
It's funny that so many people predicted Megan Hilty would be the critical stand-out when Allison Janney is running away with the individual praise thus far (though Marc Kudisch is close behind.)
Regardless of how mixed the notices, the show will be a huge hit.
I'm going to say this now for the record. If 9to5 is not nominated for Best Musical I have little doubt they still will perform (the title song) at the Tony Awards.

I am really surprised with the reviews, but the nominating meeting is tomorrow morning... how many can reviews can the committee read by then? *wishful thinking*
I was hoping for better reviews

i'm fairly certain they all have the internet, WOW2.

I said it was wishful thinking. Although, I doubt they stay up just to read reviews like some of us.

The NOMINATING committee is NOT meeting tomorrow.
The ADMINISTRATION committee meets tomorrow to determine final eligibility and category placement.
Are you kidding? They're reading those reviews like vultures tonight. It's part of the gig.

Ok, I said it was wishful thinking, jeez.
