sorry guys, the tone of both reviews is more negative than positive, but then again, I suspect the 9 to 5 fanatics will be grasping for any ounce of positive spin they can find tonight
Ha ha, I ain't a fan, I can guarantee that.
The Associated Press is Mixed:
"Physically, "9 to 5" is a big show, with designer Scott Pask's office settings fluidly moving on and off stage. And William Ivey Long's period costumes evoke some of the less hideous fashion choices of the '70s.
In the end, though, "9 to 5: The Musical" is a mixed bag. Savor it for Parton's songs and the three women who sing most of them. They make the case for the show being more than just another workday event."

I do not relish any shows getting less-than-kind reviews, and I actually kind of enjoyed 9 TO 5 -- it's a fun show -- but I've said from the start it would get mixed reviews, and ultimately, it deserves them. I have a feeling the other reviews will continue along this trajectory.
I'm thinking, review - wise, there are other shows that now deserve that Best Musical spot more than this, even if they pretty much have a guaranteed nomination.
BE has virtually now zero competition.
Backstage is Positive:
"George Abbott?style musical comedy is alive and still breathing at the Marquis Theatre. Blessed with a terrific company of comic actors and led by three absolutely stellar performances, 9 to 5 is unquestionably entertaining and likely to be pleasing Broadway audiences for some time. It also has a dexterous physical production that allows it to move like a musical comedy should. If only the creators had applied the legendary Mr. Abbott's rigorous standards, they might have had a show for the ages. Instead, we have to settle for the not inconsiderable pleasures available."

You know that's gonna be plastered outside the Marquis by next week!
blaxx, I agree BE is the frontrunner, but NEXT TO NORMAL is gaining a lot of momentum among voters. I still would place my money on BE at the moment, but N2N has a better shot than we might think, and I guarantee it has a better chance to win than 9 TO 5. The latter is a distant third.

Has this really already turned into a best musical thread? I was gonna give it till page 3.
I agree, wishing. I apologize for taking the bait. Back on track now...
I'm not really surprised by these. Didn't the show receive a similar response from critics in LA?
NY1 [with video] is Mixed:
""9 To 5" is the workaholic of Broadway musicals, trying in every way to entertain its audience with decidedly mixed results. I kept thinking of Kander and Ebb's lyrics - "Give 'em the old razzle dazzle... give 'em act with lots of flash in it and the reaction will be passionate." As a musical, "9 To 5" is pretty flimsy stuff but credit is due to a very talented company that works overtime to sell it."

I'm not all that sure 9 to 5 is a distant 3rd...remember, the nominating committees always have a history of going for more critically liked shows, even if they are smaller or no longer running, which means both [title of show] and Rock Of Ages have a better shot at nominations, based on the few reviews we've seen of 9 to 5 so far tonight...unless the NY Times is an out and out rave, I think 9 to 5 will be battling for that 4th Best Musical nomination slot come next Tuesday
Edit: review already posted.
If these reviews are a sign of things to come, Ripley has nothing to worry about as it should be.

Unlike NEXT TO NORMAL, 9 TO 5 doesn't need stellar reviews to survive. They will be perfectly fine. I can promise you that.
N2N kicked ROA and TOS out of contention though... BE, SHREK, 9/5, N2N in the end.
Right??

Is it bad that I legit laughed at that? Mainly the... "[title of show] and Rock Of Ages have a better shot at nominations"

the Nominating Committee will put the most marketable musicals in the slots with one slot left open for the "artistic" musical (NEXT TO NORMAL).
They need the three biggies (SHREK, BE, 9/5) in contention and on the telecast. They're trying to boost the whole big, grand, Broadway musical comedy spectacle feeling.
ticket sales are hurting. audience attendence is down. 9 TO 5 will get a spot. There is no question.

sorry Wishing, but you should study up on your Tony Awards history....the Nominating Committee often leaves out the big crowd pleaser musicals with mixed reviews and goes with smaller more critically acclaimed shows instead....happens virtually every year.....I guess we'll see who's right on Tuesday

Yeah. That explains why The Wedding Singer and Cats went NOWHERE at the Tonys and Side Show was a Tony darling.
Word of Mouth is Very Positive:

They basically all agree it's a lot of fun. WHAT. THE. F*CK. IS. STEVEN. WEARING?
ticket sales are hurting.
Are they?
audience attendence is down.
Is it? You could have fooled me.
The economy may be hurting, but ticket sales have been pretty solid throughout this recession.

I guess you are all correct...they always go for the big commercial shows over the smaller quirky shows...like last season when they nominated The Little Mermaid and Young Frankenstein and the season before when they went with Legally Blonde....yup, I guess I'm wrong

I must have been dreaming then when Wicked, Mamma Mia, & Mary Poppins were nominated.
For the record, I enjoyed 9 TO 5.
That said, JazzSquare55/TheCharleston/TooDarnHot's opinions are questionable, both because of his history on this board and the fact that he just reappeared in this new screen name two days ago.

I can't wait for this persona's hilarious meltdown. Will it be in the vein of his near-destruction of a beloved Broadway performer's career or his constant personal attacks and threats?
Don't bother. Every time you remind people who he really is he'll ignore you and change the subject.
