One of the many reasons I love Stephanie... Ben Brantley calling her "wooden" though... not cool.

I think this will still be a hit, regardless. Word of mouth is really fantastic and this marketing team (unlike, say, N2N's marketing team --although granted they have a harder task marketing an original musical--) has been working their ass off trying to get the show out there in a way that will sell to the tourist crowd.
Will it win ANY Tonys? At this rate, could it possibly not even get a Best Musical nomination? I hope it will.
While the show is not perfect, it seems like Brantley was just out for them.
Much of that review is just plain nasty, especially some of his comments on Block. First saying that she is playing a 'Thankless' role, I find hers to be one of the most interesting of the three.
And her belting should not be classified as 'American Idol' style.
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
TheaterMania is Mixed to Positive with an absolute RAVE for Janney:
"9 to 5, the sturdy if essentially unexceptional musical version of the hit 1980 film now at the Marquis Theatre, heralds the arrival of a marvelously charismatic leading lady for musical theater: Allison Janney.
Admittedly, the actress -- best known for her Emmy Award-winning work on television's West Wing -- is no stranger to the dramatic stage. But she simply galvanizes the show as Violet, the no-nonsense secretary who strikes a resounding blow for women's rights in the workplace. True, her singing voice may not be the strongest in the show -- that honor belongs to the iron-lunged Stephanie J. Block as Judy -- but she has both a great sense of tone and rhythm and a grand sense of comic timing that allow Violet's stinging barbs to land explosively and hilariously.
Dolly is a charmer and her promotion of the show will keep it running for quite some time. I don't know how anyone out there can see this woman on an interview and not have his/her face light up at her warmth and kindness. I am saddened that her first Broadway show wasn't a big "hit" with the review-ies, but I think it'll attract tourists, fans of the movie, and Dolly followers to last at least 1-2 years. (Here's hoping, anyway! I enjoyed the show.)
Word-of-mouth is more important that any review. Its sure helped shows which received terrible reviews like WICKED, MAMMA MIA! and even TITANIC several years ago.
Brantley is right on the money. This show is a total mess. I love Allison Janney and think Block and Hilty are incredibly talented, but they deserve a better vehicle.
It got 15 nominations the other day & he hated it.It proves he does not know his ass from a hole in the ground. Why do people keep listening to these hacks?
I think we can all just come to the conclusion that Ben Brantley is a sexist, egotistical bigot.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Mr. Roxy, usually I'm not a fan of Mr. Brantley, but again, he was spot on. I have no idea what in the world besides the three leading women there was to nominate about 9 to 5. The choreography is dreadful, the songs are forgettable, the book is a rehashed version of the movie, and the whole thing just looks like an overblown mess. Just because something gets nominations or even wins doesn't mean it's good (Renee Zellweger for Cold Mountain much?). Updated On: 4/30/09 at 10:52 PM

Or Best Choreography. The hell? *jump off chair* *grab my boob* *stretch* *jump* *hop* *headbang*
I'm happy you enjoyed your night, but I personally cannot understand why anyone would think it was a "great" or even "good" show. I didn't understand why anyone would enjoy Young Frankenstein, either, though I don't think 9 to 5 was as bad as that. It's just so flat and messy to me.
