#2re: 9 to 5 frozen yet, or still changing things?
Posted: 4/27/09 at 6:29amIt must be frozen by now, given that critics have been in this weekend, and the show opens Thursday night.

Posted: 4/27/09 at 8:36amI saw the first preview and I saw it this past friday and not much has changed. Really all they've done it tighten up the book a bit. Changed one of SJB's costumes.

They were still making minor changes as of Thursday's performance, but it is now frozen.

Which costume did they change from the first preview?
I saw the first preview and then I saw it again on Saturday the 18th. The only things I noticed they changed were a few line changes here and there. I think they mainly used the preview period to tighten up the technical ins-and-outs of the show which I have to say they did a great job of.

Posted: 4/27/09 at 9:19amSince the first preview, have they fixed the elevator? What does it do?

They fixed it on the 18th.
It just seems like they're having a bit of difficulty timing it well. I've heard from everyone that's seen it that I know (and I noticed it last time I saw it as well) that Janney has to spit out her line a bit and rush into the elevator to avoid the closing doors. But at least they opened and closed on the 18th, unlike the first preview.

A change I noticed in Megan's "dream sequence" is that at one point the ensemble used the ropes to create three jump ropes that Megan hopped through while singing. On Thursday that section was cut and she no longer jumped through the ropes at all.
There was a bit of minor dialogue change too. For example, the "casual Friday" joke near the end has been altered slightly. At the first preview when Marc is asked why he's in his pajamas, Stephanie said, "It's relaxed Fridays," to which Allison interjected, "No, casual Fridays...casual sounds better." Now Allison simple answers the boss with, "It's casual Friday."
These are just minor, minor changes that are helping to tighten up the show. I have seen it three times now and each time it's getting better and better.

Is that dumb "just do it" line still in it?

The costume Steph wears when she crosses the stage and that guy checks her out is different.
and yes the "Just Do It" line is still in.

Dumb. Jokes like that are always asinine abd cheap. And that "just do it" one is reallly lame.
It reminds of once during the last season of The Love Boat where the Mermaids did a salute to 1928 and one of the lines they sang was "On Wall Street things are looking fine/We can hardly wait for 1929."

I remember being so scared that thing was going to chop off her arm when I saw it in L.A.
I'm telling you, there's going to be an accident involving that thing.
#14re: 9 to 5 frozen yet, or still changing things?
Posted: 4/27/09 at 5:17pmI'm sure that there isn't much force in the elevator doors.

This past Staurday, the guy selling 9 t0 5 stuff said the show had already been recorded.
No idea who is right . Having said that. it would be nice for bonus tracks of cut songs but I doubt it will happen.

Posted: 4/27/09 at 7:36pmI sure hope not, Piragua. I witnessed an onstage mishap involving the set in L.A., and that was the last one I want to ever see/hear/read about!

The cast recording has not been recorded yet. It will be recorded sometime next month. They wouldn't do the cast recording so close to opening when there is plenty of time after.

Posted: 4/28/09 at 10:49amThey will be recording the album on the Monday after the opening. This is traditional for most new musicals as they are usually changing things right up until opening night.

The Monday after opening IS technically "next month"... could that be where the confusion is? Anyway, I'm just glad it's being recorded =)
Any thoughts on who is behind the official 9 TO 5 youtube page and how they have been able to get such great footage? I hope it continues, I'd love to see, for example, some more behind the scenes videos of the TV appearances, recording sessions, backstage opening night type stuff, etc!

I saw the second preview and saw it last Saturday, and there weren't any noticable differences to me. It's not a bad show, but again, it could be so much better than it is. I feel like they sort of just settled. I mean, seriously, why is that God awful "Always A Woman" song still in there? It replaced another song, right? I can't imagine it's better. And I hate that stupid lyric his other song something about "how I'm the boss." It gets laughs, but makes me cringe everytime.
And I don't get the "just do it" line. I mean I GET it, but I don't get why it's in the show. They don't work at an advertising firm, no? So what's the relevence? I feel like someone thought it was funny and no one had the heart to tell them it didn't work.
Oh well. It's still a fun show. Def. could be better with better choreography, but hey whatever. I've enjoyed myself both times, and I would totally go back and see it again.

Are you talking about the lyric "Will I get those legs uncrossed? Of course I will, yeah, cause I'm the boss"
Marc CRACKED ME UP with his delivery of that! Cringe worthy? Well, duh! He's supposed to be creeping you out. That's the song where we first see how sleazy he is. I know others who found that whole song a bit too much when considering how appropriate it would be for kids to see, but I actually thought it's the perfect combo of unapologetic (insert all nasty adjectives pertaining to Hart) and comedy... at least to me. And I'm not just saying that because I'm in support of all things 9 TO 5, it seriously was the one lyric that really cracked me up in that song. It's just so wrong it's right! LOL

Posted: 4/29/09 at 1:53amNo, I mean, I totally get why it's in there and blah blah blah. But it's just a bad lyric. There are some other lyrics in that song that work, and I think the song as a whole totally works. It gets its point across, but - and I think this is my main problem with the score as a whole - the song just doesn't go anywhere. It doesn't have that typical big Broadway type finish, ya know? And most of them don't. Even the ending of "Get Out and Stay Out" doesn't really end all that excitingly. It's got a "money" note, but there are better money notes being hit all over Broadway.
