I suppose I don't really want to drag it off topic too much, but I'll say that - holding different, opposite opinions isn't really a contradiction (which is when something is true and not true at the same time):

(case A)
1. Person believes X
2. Another Person believes 'not' X

Both of these can be true, they aren't the opposite of each other. (As you said a person can believe what they want and it doesn't mean it is true). The opposite of each other (and therefore a contradiction) is:

(Case B)
1. Person believes X
2. (same) Person believes 'Not' X

(I.e. it can't be true that someone can believe something, but not believe the same thing, at the same time)

or
(Case C)
1. X
2. 'Not' X

(I.e. it can't be true that X exists, and X doesn't exist, at the same time)

And even if Case A were a contradiction (which as I said I don't think it is), I doubt Scripps2 was talking about it in terms of that - it isn't controversial and doesn't say anything about the actual beliefs they hold. So I think he is talking about Case C -

e.g. 1.Zeta Jones' is good in certain scenes
and 2. Zeta Jones' is not good in (the same) certain scenes

I can't understand how he could say something like this is 'true'.

I understand that he could mean in the form:

1. Zeta Jones is good in some scenes
2. Zeta Jones is not good in other scenes

But this isn't a contradiction, because 2 isn't the opposite of 1 (The opposite being not good in those same scenes).

Maybe this seems stupidly 'anal' or whatever (not in the good way, unfortunately :P), but still. I guess "contradiction" is also used somewhat freely in common speech, but I don't know - I just feel it necessary to say something when I don't agree with something [I guess this is what a forum is about, after all).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Perhaps I should have said opposing views rather than contradictions. However I was using the word in the Case A scenario rather than Case C.

Having said that I don't understand your Case C as even "Zeta Jones' is good in certain scenes" is a subjective statement.

I may have been referred to by another poster as "the Henry Higgins of Broadway World" recently but I took that in the good humour with which I presume it was intended: it is not a crown I would choose to wear myself, as I know my own limitations when it comes to the use of the English language.

I don't understand what this sentence means either:

"Maybe this seems stupidly 'anal' or whatever (not in the good way, unfortunately :P), but still."

It's a double entendre. Anal as in anal retentive and anal as in butt sex.

PLEASE no one have to ask which of those is the "good way."

I just came back from the show.
I'm not usually a fan of Sondheim's musicals, but I enjoyed this one.
I highly doubt this musical piece would be selling out nightly w/o Catherine Zeta Jones. But the good news is that CZJ doesn't dissappoint. She sang the songs beautifully, and her acting was top notch. She was a goddess onstage, a lot like her Velma Kelly on screen at times. I couldn't take my eyes off of her, even though I'm not a fan of her film work(except for Chicago).
Angela Lansbury was also terrific in the show, although her singing was more talking than singing. She was the only person in the cast who couldn't really sing, but I certainly enjoyed her performance nevertheless.
Alexander Hanson was simply fabulous.
The rest of the cast was filled with beautiful voices and singers. Erin Davie, Hunter Hedlika, Leigh Ann Larkin and Ramona Mallory were terrific!!!
Glad I got to see this. It was quite magical.

yes -- the reviews are coming out on Monday. Critics actually attended performances last week - I don't think there is an official reopening night party celebration tomorrow or anything like that.
