re: A Slap In The Face of Stephen Sondheim

I was looking forward to hearing her sing the song. I own the recording she did of it and it is wonderful. When Hugh Jackman started singing it I thought "Oh no, what's up. Did she not show". I was wondering if they threw him in becasue she might have been under the weather? His mic was turned up pretty high. But if you listened closely, she was hitting practically all of her notes. I am sure we will get some explanation from some source as the week goes on.

"The specialty dance portion of his evening complete, Jackman reached for a legit tone later in the three-hour ceremony. Referencing the 75th birthday of Stephen Sondheim, he sang the Bernstein (and Sondheim) anthem "Somewhere" with R&B star Aretha Franklin in a duet that would have had "American Idol" judges creating fresh adjectives. (The most famous "Idol" criticism of "pitchy" might have popped up had Simon Cowell been in the house.)" -playbill.com

That sums it all up right there....the fact that this was a tribute to Sondheim and they state,"he sang the Bernstein (and Sondheim) anthem "Somewhere" with Sondheim in parentathese (sp?)
WHAT A TRIBUTE!

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

I think that they should have picked a better song! I mean, Sondheim wrote the lyrics to Somewhere, but his main contribution to musical theater was his compositions. I think Being Alive would have been a better choice.

I agree with that, TheaterChick. "Being Alive" would have been a better choice

The sad part is that Bernadette Peters, who is considered one of the leading interpreters of Sondheim, sings on the show and doesn't even get to sing Sondheim. She should have been given that spot to sing a Sondheim number.

It's not a theory-it's fact. TIAA-CREF which has the "Somewhere" commercial is a sponsor of the Tonys. And it's more than a little moolah- they're a major advertising sponsor.

Being Alive a better choice? Not to the TV exces who have never heard of that song. If they wanted a Sondheim song, I promise you the only other song they considered was Send in the Clowns. You have to remember they have the silly idea that if they pick a well-known song and a well-known singer they will get a huge audience.

This whole performance, while seeing Aretha on stage singing was a treat, made me sick. God forbid they choose one of his COMPOSITIONS instead of lyrical works.

Bernadette Peters would have done an awesome job with the Sondheim number. She's worked with him so many times that it would have meant so much more.

During the performance all I kept thinking was "where the heck is Bernadette Peters when you need her"?! "Being Alive" would have been amazing, by the way!

I thought it was horrendous. First off, WSS isnt really a Sondheim show. I condiser it to be Berstein. I think they should have sung something that he wrote both music and lyrics from. They should have done some SITPWG, Company or Todd. And Arethra was straing her voice. I think that it was not a tribute as much as it was a funeral. Hugh JAckman is great but with Aretha straing (it also sounded like she didnt know the words) I think it was just awful. (but then again Im not a fan of this years Tonys at all)

Maybe they were trying to suggest that Sondheim should have just stuck to writing lyrics instead of music.

BroadwayBaby6 - aha!!! Thank you - that was our (my friends' and I) theory as to why they picked that song!

I feel so smart, lol...like Nancy Drew...or Harry Potter...

re: A Slap In The Face of Stephen Sondheim

A tribute to Sondheim should have gone something like this:

Patti LuPone - Being Alive
Bernadette Peters - Children Will Listen
Carol Burnett - You Could Drive A Person Crazy
Nathan Lane - Comedy Tonight
