A Steady Rain: Daniel Craig hates cellphones

I caught the 8PM ASR tonight and halfway through the play Daniel Craig asks a woman, "do you want to get that?" when her cell phone rang - Hugh slapped his lap approvingly. The audience clapped. Neither actor looked amused.
Patti Lupone would be proud
Overall, It was very solid theatre. Definitely worth a look. DC was spellbinding, a complete transformation. Tony nod for sure. Hugh was solid too but he lacked something, maybe it was his accent that's a bit underdeveloped. I didn't feel that he was completely believable or convincing in his role. I agree with a previous poster that I would've preferred to see the events unfold as opposed to simply having them be recounted. I suppose it ties into the tagline strung underneath the marquee "the truth is how you tell it". A lot of dialogue stumbles more so from HJ. 3.5/5 stars.

Tony nod for sure
That's what people said about Radcliffe. I think there's too much time between the close and Tony time.

But people are stupid and it's live theater.
Equus being overlooked was a shocker, but I think these are more high profile stars, and Hugh Jackman could go on stage and take a **** and they'd still give him a Tony nom.
I walked by the theater tonight, and I'm amazed that they would book two shows side by side that both are 90mins and have high profiles star in them. That street is a madhouse!

"Diva."
You say that like it's a bad thing.

What 2 shows?

Well, Daniel R is also a high profile star though, I could be mistaken though. But Daniel Craig just did 007 as far as I can remember.

LOL!!! That made me laugh!

God Of carnage and A Steady Rain are pretty much next door to each other.
Wolverine, James Bond and Tony Soprano all within ear shot!

I'd have to guess that more people know who Daniel Radcliffe is than Daniel Craig. Six HP movies > 2 JB movies. Prior to Casino Royale the only film I'd seen Craig in was the first Tomb Raider

Posted: 9/20/09 at 2:26amAll that hulabaloo and it's only Marcia Gay Harden who truly meant enough to me to ask for a photo with her, which she graciously obliged me (and several others), by the way. She really made me a fan for life when I saw "Mona Lisa Smile." She stole that movie and made something otherwise schmaltzy memorable and authentic. What she brought to her character in that movie was profoundly moving. The Tony win for the play was well-deserved as well.

Posted: 9/20/09 at 2:55amI gotta say.. although I HATE when people's cell phones go off.. because there really is no excuse for it.. he shouldnt have said anything.. in the previous case where Jackman had to say something to the loud woman.. was a differen story because everyone had lost their concentration and could just hear this woman, and were turning and shushing her.. in this case I doubt it was the same

I was not there for this incident, but I believe there is a general negative bias toward actors who do these kinds of things. Since they are the professionals, and working hard to make things perfect onstage, I like to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Only once have I seen this happen myself, when Roger Robinson rebuked an audience high atop the Belasco, seemingly in character until I realized he was not: "What are you doing up there? Whatever candy you have, would you unwrap it now?!"
I have to say, I'm sure the audience members around the unsophisticated culprit were relieved and thankful. I was doing SRO at the show on this particular day and myself and the lady next to me became pissed off and turned around to see who was speaking far above whisper level behind our shoulders. It was the ushers. Who would we go to to complain about them?

Posted: 9/20/09 at 3:22amWell when he first stood up from his chair which was 5 min into the play he had a very noticeable bulge, one that even DC glanced at quickly. I could see his face perfectly as I was sitting second row house right and DC was facing me from stage right. Then a line came in a few minutes after which referenced "hard ons"..I chuckled. In subsequent stand ups, H's bulge disappeared. Maybe it was his pants riding up, but either way a nice little bonus.

For those of you that haven't seen the show...the characters already address the audience throughout, the fourth wall really doesn't exist here...so it wasn't a huge deal at all.
And the ushers DID tell people to turn them off.
I thought the performances were really impressive, but it's a hard style of writing to get through -- they do, indeed, pull it off.
For the matinee I was across the street at Superior Donuts....you could hear the freakishly lound cheering for when each of them came out at stage door. Upon leaving Steady Rain (8pm) I was expecting throngs of folks at the stage door (NONE of whom had seen the 8pm show -- I was sitting on the aisle along the exit doors so among some of the first out) but I was NOT prepared for the huge amounts of POLICE....I must have passed 8 or 10 officers before I got to the corner at 8th.

Posted: 9/20/09 at 10:05amYes, it is the job of the ushers/house management to tell patrons to turn off their phones. Does that mean that people actually do it? No. Last night at The Retributionists, during a particularly heated scene, a woman's phone went off. After ringing seven or eight times, she located it and proceeded to ANSWER IT. "Hello...NO, I'M AT THE THEATRE...can't really TALK right now..." Other patrons were losing their ****, and it really killed the flow of the show, but Margarita Levieva and Adam Rothenberg played through the entire scene without missing a beat. I commend them for it.

At Superior Donuts....someone had an alarm go off. And never turned it off.
Single Beep. Single Beep. Single Beep. (for 15 or 20 seconds)
Double Beep. Double Beep. Double Beep. (for 15 or 20 seconds)
TRIPLE Beep. TRIPLE Beep. TRIPLE Beep. (for 15 or 20 seconds)
ARRGH!

Posted: 9/20/09 at 10:16amThat happened to me last year at Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. One cellphone vibrated for the entire second act. They guy just sat there, doing nothing about it. Probably one of the most infuriating experiences of my life.

I haven't seen the show, and was being sarcastic in my first post, but that's interesting and good to know.

No, it's not. It didn't happen until later than night when we were getting ready for bed.
#21re: A Steady Rain: Daniel Craig hates cellphones
Posted: 9/20/09 at 4:42pmIt happened after a cell phone started ringing. It happens every time.

Posted: 9/20/09 at 4:43pmDramamama, I was at the same performance. I thought it was part of the show.

That beeping was so annoying at Donuts! I knew it was clearly not part of the show when after almost a minute it had zero affect on the action happening on stage.
