#1"A classic Broadway moment" Huh???

On XM Broadway earlier, they played one of their audio tags. "A classic Broadway moment." This is usually followed by the likes of "Hello Dolly" or "Everything's Coming Up Roses" or "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" etc.

So I heard them say "A Classic..." like they always do -- and it was then followed by "Chiquitita" from Mamma Mia. WTF? A CLASSIC Broadway moment?

What is your favorite "classic" Broadway moment? A scene, song, or image that has gone beyond its source, ones that are recognizable even to B'way novices... I'd say:

Dancing on the tables in Rent
Jets' dance at the start of WSS
Light/Piazza hat flying (more obscure for the general public though...)
Defying Gravity's cherry-pickin' finale
Marius/Cosette kneeling with Valjean
Evita's arms raised
Downstage lined with drag queens in La Cage
Saigon's copter, etc.

And yes, I'm aware that this is a slightly more thought-out and legible version of one of the dreaded Musicalmaster's type of question, but I've had 3 yummy glasses of Pinot Grigio and don't care.

I'd have to say some of the moves from "All That Jazz", in CHICAGO especially that arm-scoop thing they do on the line "where there's a nightly brawl" When I first saw the show 2 years ago, I couldn't believe how recognizeable that move was.

The cast lined up in RENT for Seasons of Love.

I'd have to go with Dolly descending the stairs to Harmonia Gardens, the title number of "Oklahoma!", and the end of "Rose's Turn".

The final note of "And I am Telling You" in Dream Girls,Angel coming out in the Santa drag in RENT, seeing just the feet tap dancing at the bottom of the curtain at the very beginning of 42nd Street and, for me personally, Edna appearing at the top of the hairspray can during "You can't stop the beat."

"The Phantom of the Opera" from The Phantom of the Opera
"Springtime for Hitler" from The Producers
"One Day More" from Les Miserables
"Willkommen" from Cabaret
"Defying Gravity" from Wicked
"Seasons of Love" from Rent
"One (Reprise)/Finale" from A Chorus Line
"All That Jazz" from Chicago
"The Circle of Life" from The Lion King
"Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'!" from Oklahoma!

These are a couple of songs/scenes that I think both represent Broadway & would be recognizable to the public (generally speaking).

rosscoe, that moment always receives cheers and applause in a show that has been running for 12 years. It introduces a very popular character who becomes the emotional center of the show in a way that shows the essence of the character. So yes, I would call that a classic Broadway moment.

Only from a group of Rentheads, who have seen the show way to many times. That is far from a classic Broadway Moment.

I agree that Angel coming out in the Santa suit is a classic b-way moment. The King and I is classic too....but now RENT has run far far longer than King and I.

And the King and I is an odd show to single out as being more classic than RENT. Look how embarrassing the whole premise of the show is--that the British need to come and civilize the Far East. Nothing classic about that.
