I have to agree with rosscoe. I agree the cast singing Seasons of Love is classic, but I hardly think Angel's entrance is a classic moment. It's certainly something the general public probably wouldn't recognize.
And george, how does the length of a run make a moment more classic?

Only because if it runs longer, it becomes more iconic, more recognizeable....more a part of the Broadway landscape.
Angel coming out as Santa isn't really up there with the other items mentioned here, including Seasons of Love, however, I would put it ahead of King and I only because King and I has aged so badly.

Easy on the trigger finger there, George.
I don't really consider Angel's Santa entrance a classic moment, but Seasons of Love is definitely one.

What!!
Rent has aged the worst of any show in the last 50 years, by the end of '97 Rent was showing it's age. Blaxx is right this is no longer about classic stage moments, but personal favorites.

If that is the case George, then that one woman murder mystery on Broadway is a bigger classic then them all!
Rent is really creaking at the edges. I personally never liked it's Hallmark Card view of the AIDs crisis in NYC

We'd have to define what we mean by "classic" then.
When I said that King and I has aged badly, I meant that its subject matter is no longer relevant, even in a cutesy, nostalgic way. The fact that RENt was not kept up in a physical way is irrelevant.
RENT is still a time capsule of the 1990's, and there is nothing in RENT that makes you look back at the 90's and think "oh man did society have it wrong back then" like in the King and I, a show that insists Western Civ is superior to other cultures.

oh my goodness. Let me clarify. I'm not trying to see that long run = Classic. Notice I haven't mentioned Cats or Oh Calcutta. I just meant that with a long run, a show has a chance of various images becoming more iconic and recogizable.
Its hard to compare RENT with Rodgers and Hammerstein stuff because we don't have the same perspective of it. I'm not saying that RENT is better or more classic or any other musical. I just agreed that the Santa outfit has become a classic moment.

#40re: 'A classic Broadway moment' Huh???
Posted: 2/14/08 at 12:17pmOh George, there are a lot of people who find Rent's "straight people who get AIDS may LIVE, the Homos must DIE" message more offensive than the King and I's "Westerners must civilize the Easterners" message.

"straight people who get AIDS may LIVE, the Homos must DIE"
Taking such a message away from Rent would require the viewer to have some major delusions about the show (one character who gay and has AIDS dies, the other one is alive and well at the end of the show and the one practically on her deathbed is straight...).
Also, thinking that Angel's entrance in Rent is a classic Broadway moment is delusional. Unless you're too much of a Renthead, that's not classic. "Seasons of Love"? Absolutely. The dancing on the tables in "La Vie Boheme"? Maybe. Angel's entrance in his Santa costume isn't remotely classic to this Rent fan.

...And when Mimi comes out for "Out Tonight." And when Maureen enters. They must be classic Broadway moments, too!
