I wonder why it took ABC so long to get in the game when they have a whole back catalog of Disney works to do, and not all of them will given a live feature film treatment and they could also do a live version after they do a live-action film version. Heck, with Marvel, they can do a live version of the Spiderman musical so long as they have real safety precautions as Sony doesn't own the television rights to Spiderman.
That said, a live action film of the Little Mermaid has the potential to be really beautiful as long as the film has a real good creative team with a real visual flair behind it.

This should be interesting. And TBH Laura Osnes is probably too old to play Ariel, especially on TV. Isn't Ariel supposed to be like 15 or something? They'll probably go with someone along the likes of Dove Cameron or a newcomer.

But this ins't going to be like past live musicals. They are doing something along the lines of what they did with the Hollywood Bowl event. Intercutting the movie with live performances of the songs.

Yeah. I would think Laura is too old as well. Maybe Sabrina Carpenter?

Ugh, yeah it isn't Laura.
Fans of THE LITTLE MERMAID and Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's Oscar-winning songs will enjoy this never-before-seen live action/animation hybrid television experience featuring a soon-to-be announced roster of some of their favorite celebrity artists, whose performances will weave seamlessly throughout the original animated film.
Hope to God it's at least Sara Bareillies or Dove Cameron as Ariel.

Sara Bareilles is pushing 40, so I don't really think age is going to be an issue in casting for this kind of event. I think it'll be cool to see how they execute this. It could be something really special!

It's a pretty safe bet that Rebel Wilson will again voice "Ursula" --- and Titus Burgess reprising "Sebastian"? I assume it'll be some Disney Channel twink as the Prince.

Okay, but is a live-action movie really necessary now that we have this?

"The Little Mermaid" is my favorite animated film and when I saw the headline on BW just now, I was so excited to see ABC get into the live musical game with "The Little Mermaid" as their inaugural venture. And then I read the article.
I mean, I would have loved to have attended the Hollywood Bowl concert but I would have rather seen the Broadway musical on TV than this. Ah well. I hope they find a place for Jodi Benson to participate again.

Read the full description of the project! This will not be a fully staged live musical in the sense of NBC or FOX. This is simply a viewing of the animated film with live performances woven in via what they did last year at the Hollywood bowl. Yes, a live action adaptation will still be necessary.

Major LOL @ " Yes, a live action adaptation will still be necessary." Justified - maybe, depending on what the eventual movie offers. Necessary - umm.
I still wish to see Hercules on stage, and an Aida movie.

Everyone is reporting it as a live musical though. And it sounds like it here:

I'm confused if this is going to be a Live adaptation or Hollywood Bowl version.

According to ABC, The Little Mermaid Live! will feature live musical performances combined with cutting-edge technology to create a spectacular merging of Disney’s classic animated film with live television. Live-action mixed with animation? This is intriguing!
I'm not getting live-action from that.

Knowing Disney, this will be used as a promotional tool for a live action version. Bringing back old popular franchises does nothing but make money these days, especially with all the kids who grew up watching and loving the original animated versions now becoming adults with disposable income, a deep sense of nostalgia, brand loyalty, and kids/nieces/nephews of their own to get those kids hooked thus perpetuating the cycle when Disney releases a virtual reality version in 20-30 years time.

I don't think Ohmy.disney is the go-to source for legitimate news from the ABC upfront...

Disney owns ABC.
Common knowledge. My point being the site you linked to isn't a legitimate source, so don't trust what it says.

Honestly, I wish they were doing the Broadway musical. If I wanted to watch what they are doing in October, I would just rewatch the videos from the Hollywood bowl last summer.

This is sounding more like a concert than a full scale musical.

Why bother? There are live concerts broadcast on tv (and in theaters) all the time. What would make this worth watching? Very little effort and only singing talent required.
