"I've never gotten the whole Ken Alan love affair."
His characterization reminded me of Paul Lynde.

Posted: 10/12/06 at 5:53pmThough nothing can compare to the OBCR, I like this new recording of "A Chorus Line." Sure its different, but isn't that the point? These talented singer/dancer/actors are trying to put their own imprint on these roles. Based on the recording, I look forward to seeing the show.

I really like the new recording. If it weren't for the absence of "And" and the frustration not being able to get it unless I buy the entire album again from Rhapsody online, I'd be completely happy with it.
I couldn't wait for this one to come out so I would have an alternative to listening to the original. Sure, OBCR is classic and I adore it, but the quality of recording in the 70's is nothing compared to what it is now. I love actually being able to hear all the harmonies! :)

Posted: 10/12/06 at 8:49pmI already have the OBC and i don't feel the need to buy this whole CD. What are the highlights that i should get?

Well, if you're just getting a select few, I would suggest:
-The whole montage sequence. All of it. There's a lot of new stuff.
-I Can Do That
-At the Ballet (possibly, only for Mara Davi's belt)
Wow. I think that was my whole list. I really do love it, it's just that if you're looking for the highlights, that is pretty much it.

Ugh!
They didn't even include Bobby's monologue in AND. That's just wrong.
Oh, well. At least it fits well into the CD.

Are you serious? But...why..?
UGH, what DID they do that I approve of?

Excuse me for being contrary.... I really hated it. That might just be the constant comparison to the OBCR, but even as they got triple threats (a thing that did not exist in 1976), their voices are extraordinarily weak. I hate the orchestrations with a passion. It seems like that they are being different just for the sake of being different.
The main thing that this lacks is the passion. OBCR Music and the Mirror brings me to tears every time... that’s after years and years. I didn’t even blink at Charlottes’.
And can they PLEASE be told that they’re not singing Hairspray? PLEASE?

Posted: 10/13/06 at 8:21amI've been listening to this recording non-stop since Tuesday. I agree Mara Davi sounds incredible but Natalie Cortez is the highlight for me. Overall I really love it.

"Will the revival tour? I hope it does!"
I can't imagine it not touring. The show is relatively cheap to tour and Broadway Series promoters around the country are in desperate need of musicals.

Posted: 10/13/06 at 1:07pmI was looking forward to hearing the new cast recording. Boy was I disappointed. At the Ballet sounded very nasal, IMO, and the husband in Sing (I forgot his name) sounds like he's performing at the Met. I will stick w/ the original.

Ok, for all of you out there who bought the CD, I got mine off Rhapsody and have "And" that I'm willing to share. PM me for a link.
Some of my comments, most of which echo all of yours...
At The Ballet was the standout for me, not just because of Mara (who is great in my opinion, but Alison Porter too). I'm not a fan of Deidre's though. She's just too harsh. Plus, Kelly Bishop is... well, she's Kelly Bishop. Enough said. I know, I'm trying not to compare, but with some performances, it's hard.
I'm surprised Sing! was not mentioned more. I'm not a huge fan of the song but I think this is the best I've ever heard it done. It's original and quirky without being over-acted or annoying.
Love the Montages. It's great to actually hear Connie and Don (no, I don't have the remastered OBC, but if someone is willing to take pity on me and be kind to me back for sharing And, I'd be very grearful :)).
Dance Ten: Looks Three is probably my least favorite track on the cd. So cliché. Jessica has a show stopping number and a great character and she doesn't really do much with it.
I was never a fan of Donna's until I heard Charlotte on this recording. I know she a fabulous dancer and I think she's taking this very difficult part in stride, though I wonder if there may have been someone better out there. She sounds like an alto with some high notes to me- TM&TM is not a kind song to altos. However, it's workable. Ann Reinking did fine on the number years ago and she's practically a tenor. Charlotte just sounds to strained.
Natalie Cortez is acceptable, but I was disapointed with her What I Did For Love. Mainly because when I heard her live, she blew me away. There was so much emotion in her voice and none of that got carried on to the cd.
Overall, enjoyable mainly for Mara Davi and the new material. It will probably be played as frequently as my OBC CD.
BTW, does anyone remember the natioanl tour that went out in the late 90s? I think I still have my playbill somewhere. That was my first experience with A Chorus Line and I remeber there were notable performances out of that cast (particularly Charlene Carr as Maggie and Kimberly Dawn Neuman as Val).
Also, everyone keeps mentioning the lack of a complete recording. Back a number of years ago BBC did a broadcast of the whole show. (with Donna :)). I think I have that laying around somewhere on my computer if anyone's interested.

I just had to comment that I have a new favorite moment of a cast recording.
Anybody else love when Chryssie Whitehead says "Seeing daddy, NAKED"? My God. The way she says it... it cracks me up every single time.

I hear the line "He doesn't like the way I look, he doesn't like tyhe way I dance" and then it cuts off, with he music and dancing. Did you not get the line?
I'm glad somebody did, because I didn't. It's just on my copy. A very minor glitch, nothing major left off.

I like that part, neddy.
I also like the way Goldyn sings "Tits! Where are my tits!" just because she sings it so sweetly,.
#196re: ACL Revival Recording
Posted: 10/13/06 at 11:25pmYeah, I agree. There are these random lines during the montages that I just love hearing over and over. I really love Part 4.

Some other favorite lines:
-Everything Kristine says in "Sing!"
-"For three weeks! I almost drowned!"
-"One little fart!... UGH!"
-"Did you, girl?"
-Maggie's "Dance for gran'ma!"
-"And I was SO into clothes back then..." (Greg's entire speech cracks me up)
-"Padiddle."
They're just little things, but they make listening to the entire Montage worth, well, listening to. Also, is anybody else bothered by the transition from Part 3 to Part 4? Everything else blends together (1 to 2, 2 to 3), but I hate how it just cuts off between 3 and 4. Just a little botheration on my part. (Is that a word? Who knows.)

"Padiddle"
There are some interesting variations on what happens if you're not the first to spot a car with only one headlight!
