I thought her performance in BLITHE SPIRIT was the best of all the actors out on that stage (and frankly, I loved them all).

With Angela's status as a theater legend and with the brilliant performance she is giving eight times a week in BLITHE SPIRIT, do you think she will get (and deserves to get) her fifth Tony Award, after not having won one for 30 years?

I say she deserves this one. Your thoughts?

Generally when people start talking about someone being a lock, it seems less and less likely that person will actually win.

I have yet to see BLITHE, but, I'd say she's a definite lock to win.

Meh. I love Angela, but it should've been Carey Mulligan.

I chose, and my world was shaken. So what? The choice may have been mistaken. The choosing was not.

I honestly think the Norman ladies are competition. Amanda Root is extraordinary!

There's no such thing as a lock. Remember when everyone though Raúl Esparza was a "lock" for Company?

If she didn't win for Duece I say there's no guarantee that she'll pick up the award for her role in Blithe Spirit.

She was absent from Broadway for 28 of those years!

Lansbury has four Tony Awards. The other nominees have zero. I hope the award goes to the actress giving the best performance.

Yes, Angela is brilliant in this role, and commands your attention every moment she is on stage.

While Angela Lansbury is terrific in BLITHE SPIRIT, Marin Ireland is giving a stunningly beautiful performance in 'reasons to be pretty' that I think has been severely under-appreciated. I was very happy to see her recognized this morning amongst this terrific group.

That being said, I'd say Lansbury is a pretty safe lock to win.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I'd love to see Root win! Of the NORMAN cast, she was my favorite and I loved them all.

But I'd love to see Angela win too, just because she's Angela.

I'm sure she'll win but I don't think she should win. As some other people have said, she has four Tony awards while some of the other cast members who are giving equally fantastic performances don't have any. I hope it goes to someone else.

Perhaps it was the intimacy of the theatre compared with my Row N or so seats when I saw Blithe Spirit, but I just found so many little nuances in Root's performance to enjoy. In Table Manners alone: her obsessive business with the postcards at the beginning, her body language in how she sits at the table at the final breakfast scene...

I think she's got it. No guarantees but I think she has it. I don't think it's fair to compare this to Deuce. Deuce was not as good a piece, IMO, and didn't showcase Angela the way Blithe Spirit is doing. Should she win, Angela will tie Julie Harris' record of 5 Tonys. We shall see on Jun. 7. I do think Angela will get it.

If you read this board, Miss Lansbury, (though somehow I doubt she does), I suppose it doesn't hurt for me to say? Good going, doll!
OF COURSE I hope she wins her fifth Tony, but to be nominated is special too. I knew she would at least be nominated. As she once said in an interview, "I have four Tonys and they're lovely." So if she should lose this one, it wouldn't be really a loss at all. She has earned so much over the years and has given us twice as much in return.

I enjoyed Lansbury's performance, but I am completely behind Amanda Root on this one. Hell, Root should win just for her initial reaction when she tasted the wine in Table Manners.

She should and will win. Enough with the "She has 4 already" nonsense. She's Angela Lansbury!

Who would have ever thought that she would have been on Broadway after Deuce??????

I don't think she's a lock at all. I think being "Angela Lansbury" is either going to work for her or against her. I think voters will vote on someone else.

That's all right. I didn't mean she has four and that is enough for her. That wasn't my tone at all. I love her more than any other actress, and would be more than happy for her if this was her chance to win her fifth, and it could even have been her sixth had she won for Deuce. What I meant was that I know she is gracious whether a win or a loss, she appreciates what she has earned, and is more than deserving of even more than she has earned. What hurts me most, probably even worse than it hurts her, is that she was always a bridesmaid at the Emmys for Murder, She Wrote, but never a bride. She is a lovely lady, and I look forward to seeing her at the Tony show!

^ I agree about the consistent "Murder, She Wrote" snub. The fact was that her character on that show did not have dramatic, bombastic storylines to play off of. Jessica Fletcher was more straightforward - always in command of herself and her life, always in control, always the axis of the storm rather than the storm itself.

I get the impression from interviews, though, that stage accolades mean a lot more to her anyway, so better it be Tony wins than Emmy wins. :) Regardless of whether she wins this 5th Tony, I am overjoyed to see her nominated.
