re: AVENUE Q Welcomes Back Ann Harada 7/6, Tour Stars McClure, Larsen and T

i don't know why people are mean. People become emotional on this board when all that is needed are facts to make points.
calling people stupid is sophomoric and irrational.

9-5 barely had any advance at all. It has a high running cost and the country is in a recession. I don't think logically it can make it when competing with other BIG musicals as people are choosing to go to one or 2 shows and not 3-4 like in past years.

The show got very mixed to negative reviews and it didn't get a tony nomination. All this logic points to it having a very short run or they can choose the legally blonde route and run for a while and lose 75% of their investment but keep the show open for Ego sake.
Either way the show will not recoup and if it were smart would close by labor day.

Honestly though, 9 to 5 will be one of the shows people see during tourist season. It appeals to people from all over the country. Don't you think the hicks who come to visit during the summer will want to see "DOLLY PARTON'S BIG NEW MUSICAL!"? I think that most tourists would sooner see that than a musical about a bipolar mother or a boy who dances. Regardless of reviews and Tonys, 9 to 5 will do well over the summer.

re: AVENUE Q Welcomes Back Ann Harada 7/6, Tour Stars McClure, Larsen and T

i am getting tired of explaining the economics of theater to neophytes.
IN the first month or two after a show opens it usually has good to high marks because of its ADVANCE SALES! If it has advance sales at all.
these sales are generally used within the first month or two,

9-5 had a 4 million dollar advance so it will probably look like it is doing well for the next month. The summer sales will help it stay around that level (probably worsen because most of their sales will come from discounts) and then when sept hits (if it stays open) the show will plummet into the 50-60% range and die. because the word of mouth on the show isn't great.
People walk out of the theater saying "it's fine". "it's fine" is not going to sell 125 dollar tix. "it's fine" is going to sell 55 dollar tix. They need a ROA word of mouth, which they do not have.
The shows producers know this so they will (if they are smart) take the money they make in the summer to pay back the investors and close the show.

ave q will close labor day.
this isn't rocket science. I mean, maybe it is to some who don't know how to read income statements and balance sheets.
Shows who's op costs are too high don't run (except for wicked). Producers are slowly understanding this fact.
Phantoms are about 500,000. It will run forever.
Blondes were 625-650. too much
9-5 is the same. If it is not a WICKED the show will die.
Jersey Boys is low as well. 530-550.
Roa is probably the lowest of all the musicals save N2N. which is why ROA will run for at least 5 yrs.

again, its economics. It's not difficult.

mass, don't talk to me like I don't know anything about the economics of theatre. You are not the only one with a clue, trust me. There are so many stupid things in that post of yours, but the one that jumps out is this: "People walk out of the theater saying "it's fine". "it's fine" is not going to sell 125 dollar tix. "it's fine" is going to sell 55 dollar tix." The average audience member of 9 to 5 LOOOVES the show. The people whose word of mouth really matters. It's a tourist show, and tourists are loving it. I want to know where you are getting this "it's fine" from. Are you interviewing people at the stage door? And yes, I agree about your analysis of how operating costs work...but your prediction of how well 9 to 5 will meet it's operating costs in the coming months is total speculation. Instead of saying "it will probably do worse because of discounts", think logically. The only direction 9 to 5 grosses will be going during the summer is up. So get off your high horse and realize that there are PLENTY of other people on these boards who know a thing or two about theatre economics.

re: AVENUE Q Welcomes Back Ann Harada 7/6, Tour Stars McClure, Larsen and T

I am quite intrigued as to why Harada is returning to AV. Q so quickly after 9 TO 5 opened. But oh well, good for her whatever her reasons are, she is wonderful as Christmas Eve.
And why is no one rejoicing about the fact Larsen is joining as Kate/Lucy? She was pure perfection when I saw her in the tour back in December, so much charisma, so much fun (not to mention how incredibly funny she is), and such vocals! I'm so glad she's doing the role on Broadway, she's the real deal.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I saw Rob McClure three times on tour and he was AMAZING every time. His Rod actually made me tear up a little when he said "Chrismas Eve... I miss Nicky" right at the beginning of "I Wish I Could Go Back To College."

And I'm a sucker for originals returning to shows years later. I just think it's very cool and honorable. Pretty neat to know that two of the, what, six actors/puppeters in Q were with the cast at the very beginning, and were performing on that stage at the Tony Awards in '04. Go Q! You're one of my favorites.

bjh2114,
you are annoyingly weak minded.

"The average audience member of 9 to 5 LOOOVES the show. The people whose word of mouth really matters. It's a tourist show, and tourists are loving it. I want to know where you are getting this "it's fine" from. Are you interviewing people at the stage door? "

DO you realize that you berated me for saying I knew what the Average audience member is thinking, but then you said what the average audience member is thinking in the sentence prior? SO you are essentially making fun of yourself.
It's honestly like having a discussion with a small child going to school with a capri-sun in hand.

Please go back to pre-calculus and leave me alone. when you learn to have a dialogue with actual interesting facts based on logic and thought then come back to me.
You love the show 9-5. super duper. The show will close by labor day or right after. SO then you will be sad, and other shows like ROA will be open until 2014. Low Op costs= long running show. It's simple math.

"Low Op costs= long running show. It's simple math."
OH really? Since [TOS] had low op costs, it was a long running show? Hmm... I think it has to do with the demand for tickets.. or lack there of.

And just because ROA has a low operating cost does not mean that it will run until 2014...

"when you learn to have a dialogue with actual interesting facts based on logic and thought then come back to me."

and when you learn to make comments that are relevant to what was being discussed, then you can come back too.

re: AVENUE Q Welcomes Back Ann Harada 7/6, Tour Stars McClure, Larsen and T

Mass, I was going off of the blog interviews on the 9 to 5 site. There are recordings of people saying how much they love the show. Clearly "it's fine" is not the average response. And also, for the record, I enjoyed 9 to 5, but it was FAR from the best show I have ever seen. I am not arguing with you because I am trying to defend a show I love. I am arguing with you because you are acting like a stupid, biased idiot. That's all.

re: AVENUE Q Welcomes Back Ann Harada 7/6, Tour Stars McClure, Larsen and T

LOL oh my gosh. am I reading you correctly? you are going off the BLOG INTERVIEWS on the 9to5 website? are you joking me?
you are seriously sad.
you are taking the propaganda off the SHOWS website to prove your point about the audience reaction? Oh my gosh. That's it. You win. You are officially the slowest person here. I thought it was Charleston or CSonbroadway, but no, its you buddy.

Ok so your logic of audience reaction, just for the readers at home, is the interviews on the cast website. That's your evidence.

Oh i might laugh about this one for a week. at least.
