Thinking about Lesli Margherita retuning to Matilda, I was wondering about other actors who have done the same (either returning to a still-running production, or reprising their role in an entirely new one). Surely there have been a ton-- Alan Cumming is a recent big one that comes to mind-- and I am curious about others.
Also, if an existing thread on this subject already exists, you can just point me towards it without chastising my "laziness" for not having found it. Thanks in advance!

In addition to those already mentioned in both threads, both Carolee Carmello and Tony Yasbeck returned to Finding Neverland for the last months of the run.

I believe Terrance Mann returned to Les Miserables to close the original production.
Also, there was a video backstage tour/interview with Jeanna DeWall. She talked about how the producers of Kinky Boots have been great about letting actors depart for other projects and then return. For example, When she left to do the out of town Boston run of Waitress, Haven Burton came in for a brief run. When done in Boston, Jeanna returned.

Andrea Martin left the revival of Pippin and later returned for a limited time toward the end of its run.

Marissa Jaret Winokur, Harvey Fierstein and Clarke Thorell were in the OBC of Hairspray and returned years later during the final months to close the show.

I believe Terrance Mann returned to Les Miserables to close the original production.
Close, but he did not stay all the way to the extended close date. He played through early May & someone else came in for the last 2 weeks.

Bully Porter left the show for a week or two so he could play the tour in his home town of Pittsburgh. So, no?

Grasan Kingsberry played Buster/Adam in the original production of the Color Purple and now the revival as well.

Donna McKechnie returned to A Chorus Line as Cassie in about 1988. She had been unable to dance after a long bought of arthritis, but had managed to recover. She went into the show for a scheduled three month stand and played eight. She was about 45.

No..Billy also left the show from (I think) Jan - April earlier in the same year he took off the week to play in Pittsburgh. Kyle Parker Taylor who was on the road as Lola came in to play it on Broadway for those four months...and then they switched again during the Pittsburgh week.

I don't think that is true. Once she left, she was gone. I believe Mimi Hines played Fanny until the show closed, including its last performance. You may have been confused by the bootleg tape of Barbra's last performance in the show, because the house manager announces that the role of Fanny Brice will be played by Barbra Streisand. I think that was just done to whip up frenzy in the already excited house.

Several members of the original cast of MAN OF LA MANCHA returned to the show from time to time. I saw the show shortly before it closed, and Ray Middleton and Robert Rounseville had returned to their roles as The Innkeeper and The Padre. Richard Kiley did a few subsequent revivals of the show as well, and Joan Diener returned to the role of Aldonza in the Raul Julia revival many years later.
Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick returned to THE PRODUCERS some time after they had left it, and Lane returned to IT'S ONLY A PLAY after taking a break to star in THE ICEMAN COMETH.

Would it also include west end running shows? If so than les miserables and phantom of the opera would have a quite a few. For les miserables Alfie Boe, Ramin Karimloo, JOJ quickly come to mind. I believe for phantom on Broadway , Hugh Panaro reprised the role and on the west end JOJ as well. In particular for JOJ I think reprising those roles really held him back as an actor. He has a such a velvety smooth voice and while I love those productions I would love to him step out from behind the mask and prisoner 24601.

John Lloyd Young did return to Jersey Boys in the summer of 2012 which then led to him getting cast in the film adaptation and then a limited engagement in London.
