VARIETY This jukebox musical about the Temptations has smooth moves and irresistible sounds, but Dreamboys it ain’t.

NY POST **** (2 1/2 STARS out of 4)
“Ain’t Too Proud” is a polished tribute ride to an act that keeps on going, albeit with different singers: Williams notes there have been 24 Temps since the early ’60s, when the group started. Proud this show is — but distinctive, it ain’t.

NY 1 “Ain’t Too Proud” ranks pretty high as jukebox musicals go. Not only is it vastly entertaining, it reminds us how the best of Motown was able to prove that music could be colorblind even if the rest of the world wasn’t.

This show will probably run longer than THE CHER SHOW and THE PROM.

While maybe true, The Prom is not a jukebox.

I don't think these are strong enough reviews to guarantee it the 4th Tony nom slot. Still hovering around 4th/5th with Be More Chill and possibly Beetlejuice. Unless it's getting some other nomination love (Choreography seems likely, but Director, Book, and an Acting nom is still uncertain).

Having seen this already, I think the mixed reviews are appropriate.

Didn't spot this one posted yet, from The Daily Beast:

I agree especially since most other reviews were mixed.

Definitely mixed/positive which is pretty much what I expected for this one. I think it'll have a very successful run.

From the above review: “Slick, straightforward and altogether pleasant entertainment”.

Does anyone else find it extremely confusing when a show is considered a NY Times Critic's Pick but the review is not a rave or only mostly positive? What are the politics behind that I wonder.

What's confusing? He clearly enjoyed the show, and recommends it to NYT readers.

this is a very good show thats super entertaining, well crafted performed and acted, and deserves the strong reviews from nyt and others.
i saw the first preview in berkeley and posted back then this deserves a place on broadway- (and mocked by others on this site)
i think it ranks below jersey boys and beautiful and ranks above (imo) any of the other biopic musicals....
i think it will get 3-5 nominations and could win for choregraphy
costumes, lighting and maybe supporting actor for ephran sykes. i thought it would last a little longer than a year and the nyt pick could double it

Posted: 3/23/19 at 12:45amBased on the shows that have already opened this season, my guess is that Warren Carlyle will take the choreography prize for “Kiss Me Kate.” His joyous “Too Darn Hot” alone gets the biggest ovation in the show, and will hardly go unnoticed come Awards time.

I haven't seen the show.
I did just see the piece on the Today Show as part of their Broadway week. It was entertaining. How could you not love the music. But it seemed slick. Very slick. I didn't remember The Temptations performing quite like that. I searched them on YouTube and found the same title song that was done on Today. It was from 1965. Not sure where it was taped. Anyway, again, very entertaining and some of their moves are incorporated into the Broadway clip I saw. But most of their moves were not nearly as slick as what I saw on TV today. Some of them almost looked endearingly awkward.
I guess Broadway now has got to be, BROADWAY, or it's a hard sell.

This is perhaps not the right place for the question, but can anyone speak to the partial view seats for this and whether they're worth the deal ($79 very side orchestra; $69 very side front mezz) or if it's better to just go for full view rear mezz if one's looking to stick to this general price point?
