BroadwayGirl, what about "Another Day" did you find pathetic? I thought it was one of the best numbers in the film. I'm curious to know what you didn't like about it.

Didn't Mark just get the information about the eviction? I thought he just found out and was on his way home to tell Roger.

The Benny/Mimi timeframe thing is confusing me. It might just be one of those things in Rent that if you think about, it doesn't make any sense. There are quite a few of those.

This is pretty off topic, but does anyone remember the post where someone went through random LJs and took quotes about rent and posted them? It was hilarious and I am trying to find it, thought it was on this thread, but I can't find it!

The first half of it was passable, but the second Mimi left the apartment...it was ridiculous. It lost its intensity. Roger should have been up in her face screaming at her. And when she's out in the street? Why would he go out on the fire escape to hear her? He doesn't WANT to hear her, that's why he's exploding at her. The worst was when Angel, Collins, and Mark came around the corner and stood there and sang with her like some sort of sympathy. I laughed out loud.

I loved the first half. I didn't hate the second half, but I thought they should've been yelling at each other without the distance.

"Didn't Mark just get the information about the eviction? I thought he just found out and was on his way home to tell Roger."

Nope, he finds out when he walks up to the building and rips the note off. In other words...after he had already started singing the song.

But he rides his bike by a bunch of them. To me, he seemed like he knew already, since the eviction notices were everywhere, but then just grabbed that particular one to show Roger, who wouldn't know they were hanging up if he never goes outside.

But the song starts before he's on his bike, and he doesn't even seem to be looking around. I was just very unsure of why he rapidly hopped on his bike and started singing to begin with.

I didn't think those were his eviction notices, I thought they were just to show the atmosphere of so many people not being able to pay there rent. The one he rips at the apartment is probably where an eviction notice for their particular apartment would be.

Maybe he saw one before the ones the camera shows? I thought he got on his bike so fast to go home and tell Roger. But maybe that's because that's just what I expect him to do.

Maybe, but I still felt the song could have come out of something more. Or at least they could have shown that more clearly so it felt right.

Yeah, now that we are talking about it, it makes much more sense that he would know before he starts singing. The way they filmed it was pretty ambiguous.

I see your "Another Day" complaints, but it was still one of the numbers that really worked for me. That moment on stage when the Life Supporters turn and start singing to Roger always gets me, and I liked how it was handled on film. I can see why opinions would go the other way, though.

You mean that it "gets you" as in...you don't like that moment? Or you do? Because I felt that they definitely should have incorporated the life support meeting into the number in the film. It could have been chilling...I can barely watch that number onstage without crying. I was left cold in the film, and the way they "staged" it is largely to blame.

I meant it gets me emotionally. I always tear up during that part on stage. I thought it worked on film as well, though perhaps they post-Life Support gang could have appeared a little earlier, instead of just happening to be singing that credo at the same time Mimi was. Like I said, I totally understand why you and others didn't think it worked, but to me "Another Day" on film seemed very true to its roots on the stage.

I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one, BroadwayGirl. Rent reviews--post here

I also had a problem with the "back-up" singers approach to Mark, COllins and Angel in the "Another Day" part. It did not work for me, it was like a "come on out and play Roger" moment, when it should have been a completely different mood althogether.

I also love the stage way in which the Life Support meeting goes right into OUT TONIGHT, the transition Columbus goes just to show us, LOOK I CREATED A CAT SCRATCH CLUB is unnecessary and drags.

I also wish they had shot Today 4 U, similar to the flashbacks in One Song. There was too much movement and not shot the right way...when the Akita bit happens at the life cafe, NO ONE GETS IT.

People definitey got the thing about the Akita at the Life Cafe -- they laughed a LOT.

I love Out Tonight. I think it just looks good. Call it naivete, but I love it. I think showing Mimi in her "work" environment creates an important contrast that's a big part of her character -- *especially* as Rosario plays her. Rosario plays a very flirtacious Mimi, and you can tell how young she is; she feels caught between still being a girl and growing up too fast. Showing her in the club, plus the portrayal that Rosario gives her makes it look like working in the club isn't explicitly who she is, but it's just her job. She needs a job, and this is it, but there's more to her than just being a tramp. I think because they show her in and out of that environment, you can see that because of her poor choices, she's been forced to grow up very quickly, but you can also see that there's still a lot of good-hearted spirit in her.

I think a lot of the film drags, and I agree with you about that "Life Support" into "Out Tonight" on stage. The slamming into those opening chords always excites me when I see it live. It did drag on stage. Same with "One Song Glory." He plays "Muzetta's Waltz." He puts the guitar down. He walks outside. Then the song finally starts.

I liked that "Out Tonight" transitioned right into "Another Day." The movie actually gets out of its own way for a minute there.

Well i saw it in DC, with NON RENT HEADS, I was the only one laughing in the Akita bit. The best parts in the film, were obviously the moments were the director used the new medium to expand on the story, The Tango, the Glory flashbacks, the Withdrawal process...I wish there was more "clever" use of the film medium and less reliance on the show...which is not as effective in 2 dimensions. (See Phantom).

The first time I saw it was the international critics' press screening. They cracked up. The second time was all Rentheads, so that's invalid. But I saw it in suburban NY, and people were laughing. It's obviously a variable, though.

I went all three times in fairly mixed houses when it comes to ages and Rentheadness.. and you could tell some people understood, but its one of those things that to get you have to listen to the music, not just the dialogue. the same with HIV/AIDS when it comes to Mimi and Roger, I had friends that had no idea simply because they thought of the songs as just fun stuff to bounce a long with and the dialogue being the important part.

I saw it for the second time in DC (suburbs) with non-Rent fans and everyone laughed at the Evita part in the Life Cafe. My sister had actually missed that part when she saw the show on stage, and cracked up this time.

I think that's a big problem; people aren't used to having to really listen and pay attention the music in a movie. The songs in a musical tell the story, and you'll miss a ton if you don't listen to the lyrics.
