Any word on "Almost Famous" and/or "Sing Street" coming to Broadway by spring 2022?

Sing Street's website still says late 2021/early 2022. Basically, over the Winter sometime. I'm not sure if they even have a theater lined up though.

Almost Famous needs a complete recast and the book needs to be worked on to get to Broadway, in my opinion.

According to the Macbeth announcement, which has the same producer as Sing Street, they are still figuring out the best time to open. My gut says next fall though I’d love sooner.

In today's NYT article on Daniel Craig's Macbeth, Barbara Broccoli, who is also producing Sing Street, said she still has plans to bring it to Broadway but wouldn't say when other than "we're trying to figure out the best way to bring it back."

I was a huge fan of Sing Street at NYTW. I'd love to say the cast should continue with the show BUT they're so much older now. Do we think they'll recast it?

This season is starting to feel crowded already, considering the uncertainty ahead. There are 7 new musicals and 5 musical revivals or return engagements opening between now and April 2022, plus all the shows that just returned to Broadway, plus anything that hasn't been announced yet or might sneak in. It would not hurt for some titles to wait.

Musicals that realistically MIGHT show up in the 2021-2022 season:

A Strange Loop

Once Upon A One More Time

KPOP

Some Like It Hot

Sing Street

Almost Famous

Everybody's Talking About Jamie

Mr. Saturday Night

The Visitor

Kimberly Akimbo

TOMMY

If even three of the above do open in 2021-2022, that's a lot of shows vying for eyeballs and Tony attention, even with the assumption that some of the currently-running shows won't last long (Girl From The North Country, Diana, Doubtfire, etc)

This is..not great news for Sing Street. The fact Broccoli even re-booked the Lyceum - which Sing Street had begun tech in - is very ironic. Perhaps she's saving it so that when Macbeth closes, Sing Street will have first dibs at it's original home?

& Juliet will premiere in Toronto next July. There is no way it's being rushed to B'way this season. I'd say Spring 2023 is much more possible for that show.

SING STREET had vacated the Lyceum. It didn't know its return timeline, and common belief was that it was hoping for a more desirable theatre when it eventually returned, since the Lyceum is not ideal for a musical. I wouldn't read into MACBETH playing there too much...

[Edited because I just learned THOUGHTS OF A COLORED MAN is scheduled through March 20?? Bizarre... But the Booth is still open this Spring]

...Ok....I never stated otherwise? But I do think it's fair to assume that the lead producer of a musical that built an entire set for a specific theater, and was tech-ing for it's debut at the start of the shutdown, would prioritize keeping it's original theater and reopening soon.

Also, Macbeth likely never considered the smaller Booth or Golden, as Daniel Craig is capable of selling out much larger houses, and they would be leaving money on the table with less seats.

only ~2 years older, and they were pretty real to portrayed age at the time… 2 years doesn’t make a big difference when it’s live on stage, vs on film. Ben Platt was 24 playing high school Evan on stage and nobody questioned it. Brenock O’Connor is still only 21 and his lead character is about the same age as Evan.

they were a great cast, I hope they get to see the Broadway open

I was just asking about Almost Famous in another thread the other day. Last rumor was late winter or early spring at the Nederlander after Lehman. However, many of the San Diego cast have moved on to other projects- so I’m not sure they’d all re-up for Broadway.

A couple of friends caught it out at the Globe and really enjoyed it. Hope we get a chance to see it here.

I'd imagine a lot of these not established shows or shows like "MJ" are probably being hesitant opening in this season. So I don't think the show isn't going to happen, but they're probably waiting to work the kinks out with the "main stays."

I saw that the globe and liked it. Yes it needs some work but overall it was enjoyable musical and fairly different from their normal shows. It played well to the audience. I even bought a baseball cap. I guess only time will tell whether it actually goes anywhere or not. I am a bigger fan of original shows but I realize making musicals out of films at least gives them a recognizable name.

I can't begin to speculate when closings might occur. As with other things, the internet "controversy" over JLP is a tiny bubble. The rebranding as 'ALANIS MORISETTE'S JLP' may help it to an extent, though the ING advertising campaign is questionable and I don't think the Tony performance helped much.

I suspect Winter will be especially tough for a lot of shows.

I heard people were mentioning Girl From The North Country and Mrs. Doubtfire.

Pre-pandemic is was selling very well. I don’t see that changing. Sure they’ll tough it out for a bit longer. I don’t like the show, but can’t deny that other people do.
