Have McArdle replace Elena Rogers!
I would go see that.
Well to be fair Ms LuPone is of Sicilian ancestry and they speak Italian which is a Latin based language as is Spanish so I could see her getting the pronunciation right. Elaine Paige and Julie Covington are British and Madonna is American born and bred...but they could have made the effort.

Argentines also tend to speak Spanish with an Italian inflection.
Julie Covington's "daycamisados" is grating for how simple it is to correct but nobody ever thought to which means nobody looked into any of that beforehand!
The chorus do pronounce it right during "Santa Evita" ("De los tiranizados, de los descamisados"), so it was always a puzzlement to me why she wasn't corrected.
She is my least favorite Evita. The mispronunciation notwithstanding, she sounds so bored and lethargic in the concept album. I always want to scream, "Put some life into it, woman!!!"
Patti's accent was far better than some, but it's certainly not the correct pronunciation of "Buenos Aires". At least not on the cast recording or at the TONY performance...
Buenos Aires is not mentioned in "A New Argentina," which was the number performed at the Tonys.
Thos pictures of her as Evita are obviously from a production that didn't use a wig. That's her own hair, and I wouldn't blame her for not bleaching it.
It was only a 250 seat house...
Patti sang Buenos Aires at a later Tony Awards
