It's now pretty much official that while David Josefsberg is on a 5 week vacation from the end of August to the end of September, Andy Karl will be stepping into The Wedding Singer. So, Andy Karl will be playing David Fonda, a gay waiter, the mutant with the bad haircut, and others. Thoughts, comments, criticisms?
*is beyond excited*
Andy Karl as David Fonda makes me happy.

Yeah, I have a question.....who is he?

I don't get it. Why would they get an outside talent to come in for an ensemble role? Could they not have used a swing or something? It seems so strange. When I read this, I thought he was going to be playing Robbie. Where's David going?
The original Luke in Altar Boyz, he was in Grease at the Papermill Playhouse, and he was in the Bright Lights, Big City production in June in Philadelphia.
And Rentboy, I have NO idea, but I'm not complaining.

Oh! Ok. cool!
He did Grease! at the Papermill along Jennifer Hope Wills, and he also was one of the Altar Boyz, etc. It should be fun to see him in this. He is also married to Orfeh. David is getting married right?
I also know Stephen's taking a one week long vacation around the beginning/middle of September, and Kevin Kern will be playing Robbie Hart.

Perhaps he is being considered for a role in the tour?
You can't put on a swing for more than a certain amount of time. I think it's a week? I'm not sure.
David Josefsberg is already married. :)
And I believe Andy is going to be in Legally Blonde this spring, so I bet the tour thing isn't true.
Depending on how many stops, jimny. I'm pretty sure he's doing the Broadway mounting of Legally Blonde, so he probably wouldn't have time. Not discounting anything, though.

Maybe so. I think he'd make a fine Robbie. Is that a regular thing though? Bringing someone in to fill an ensemble role for a few weeks?

Good. I wasn't really interested in "Legally Blonde" but perhaps I'll see it in San Francisco now that I know. I was hoping Richard H Blake would be in it since he was in the workshop but Andy was great in "Altar Boyz" and "Saturday Night Fever".
I think they are both in it, jimnysf. In the readings, Richard was Warner, and Andy was the UPS guy, I believe.

Great! Then that will be two reasons for me to see it in SF!
Andy Karl is an amazing talent, wow, great news fer sure!
Someone said Kevin Kern is goin to play Robbie for a wk when Stephen Lynch's on holiday, I am all excited!
But one question, on the offical site, Kevin wasnt even listed as a Robbie understudy, the RObbie understudy is Matthew Stocke... why isnt he goin on instead?
Athough Nathanlane didn't know who Karl was, MANY do and as it has been said in other threads, he is very popular and has a very healthy fan base. It might help ticket sales even slightly to "stunt cast" a role like that. It's also true that there are certain contract rules as far as bumping up swings for such a lengthy period of time. I say good for him but I would STILL rather see him in leading roles, not some hokey ensemble track, sorry, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
ruthiefan, maybe because it's for a week or so, and because Kevin's a swing, and not an understudy, it's easier for Matthew to just play his normal part?
As much as I love Andy Karl, it's still going to be hell to sit through that show again, oh well, love hurts.
Awww, BOO, ruprecht. I find TWS quite entertaining...
"He is very popular and has a very healthy fan base. It might help ticket sales even slightly to "stunt cast" a role like that."
This is not stunt casting, and while he may have some fans, it's not nearly enough to refer to his being cast in the show as stunt casting.
And yes...if swings play the same role for a certain period of time, they are required to be offered the role- it's a contractual thing.
It's strange because I saw the show a week ago and I don't remember that role. Well, I'm sure he'll do well.
Adam, do you have an issue with the Karls in general? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm genuinely curious. It seems you're always the voice of doom and gloom whenever either of them are mentioned. Eg: So what if ruprecht constanly harps on Orfeh being in Spam, is it any different than the 10,000 times someone mentions Idina/Eden/Kristen/Foster/ etc... for a role? As for Karl, you weren't at Happy Days, I was and it made the frenzy over Altar boyz for him seem mild. As for what I'm hearing about WS, they need all the help they can get to sell tickets and PLEASE don't dispute that, as I'm sure you know better.
