I'm always amazed by comments that presume any kind of work for a Broadway actor is stepping down from what they've done before. While to you as a fan, Andy Mientus may be a 'star' of some kind, but the truth is he's just a working actor. The life of a working Broadway actor is not a glamorous one. You don't make the kind of money from a single gig to retire, or take years off until the next great role comes along. There are plenty of stories about actors who have been nominated for Tony Awards only to have to get sales jobs in retail stores the next season. The tour of WICKED is a production contract which is as good as it gets for musical theatre. Good for him!

He's done two Broadway shows, one flop Off Broadway musical, and a small role on a flop TV show. A major role on a highly profitable national tour is certainly not a step down. It's ridiculous to even assert that.

Wow. When you list his resume like that, it looks...really sad...

And neither do most of the actors who are cast in the role anyways

I don't get the animus against this performer. He's talented and good-looking and in a relationship with another talented and good-looking performer who's also become an accomplished director. I don't get why you all rag on him...
Oh, wait. Yes, I do. You no-account bitchez are JEALOUS.

A tour like this is an excellent gig that most musical theatre performers would kill for. It's not The Tony Award Winning and Life-Changing Star Turn, but if that's the only thing you're seeking then you will literally never work and you should drop out of the field immediately and just buy a lottery ticket instead.

Add to that resume a really terrific turn as the 3rd lead in last year's production of BENT at the Mark Taper in LA. The play was smartly done and Andy Mientus was perfect in the role.

Can the tour come back to Chicago again? It's been 3 years.

As an actor, this is a good get. I don't know Mientus from the next guy, but this is a great steady paycheck. You know you're going to do your whole contract and it's not going to close in 2 months. So it's smart on him. Put some money in the bank and live your life!
And "to have something to do while Arden is directing in LA" - grrrrrrrl I don't think you understand how little actors get paid in theater or even directors. Arden is no one sugar momma.

I never implied that he was. It was more of a "keep myself busy". I don't see how you interpolated it to me implying Arden was loaded.

He took the job because he's a working actor, and this is what working actors do. Do you realize how reductive and condescending it sounds when you put his career choices in the context of "keeping himself busy" while his husband works?

Exactly. As if he just called up Wicked and was like "I'm available." Please.
On a side note: I saw Book of Mormon tonight and was surprised to see Daniel Breaker in it. He had a string of star turns and now he's basically featured ensemble. Was just surprised. But hey, I know that's a solid paycheck.

Good for him.
Genuine question: Are height requirements that important? If they cast a shorter Elphaba (or a taller Elphaba for that matter) wouldn't it be more important that the actors look good together? I'm just thinking that aside from a couple of guys like Sebastian Arcelus and Andy Karl, I've never thought of Fiyero as particularly imposing. Although, I guess 5'8 isn't much to ask for.
