Angela out of 'Night Music' for both shows today.

I saw the matinee today as well. I really only went for Jones, as I've already seen Lansbury live. I was disappointed, but the role is so tiny and Murphy was completely adequate to the task. Catherine Zeta-Jones is worth the full price of admission alone. What an experience! And I haven't even mentioned Erin Davie's pitch-perfect performance and Leigh Ann Larkin doing possibly the best "Miller's Son" you will ever see. It would have been nicer if both of the leading ladies were there, but I can't see it any other time this week and the memory of Jones as Desiree was so incredibly worth it. I also found the production to be absolutely beautiful.

Here I Am - Did we see the same show? It's been a while since I saw it, but...Leigh Ann Larkin? Best "Miller's Son"? Hardly.

Best "Miller's Son" ever? Seriously? She walks to the lip of the stage and belts the song out like a voice major at her senior showcase, trying to impress her jury. There isn't one iota of emotion in her performance.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Okay, it's just my opinion. You don't have to bombard me with reasons why she was terrible lol. She's been a lead in two major Broadway musicals, so she doesn't need the Broadway World message board to validate her career anyway. She doesn't need my praise OR your nasty comments about her performance.

I wish you could have seen D'Jamin Bartlett's Petra. She was brilliant, especially in her unforgettable rendition of "The Miller's Son," by turns flirtatious, whimsical, defiant and practical. I not only saw her in the original production, but last year she reprised that number as part of Scott Siegel's Broadway series at Town Hall and amazingly, 36 years later, she was every bit as thrilling. I also saw Larkin, whom I thought barely OK. But I might have liked her better if I didn't have such glowing memories of Bartlett.

Bartlett still sings "The Miller's Son" in the original key. It's f*cking thrilling.

"She better be seriously ill not to go on."

What an obnoxious and ignorant comment.

First of all, I don't care if she has to stand onstage for five minutes and only say a few lines. If you're sick, you're sick. If she went on, people would complain that she sounded too sick to perform and should have called out.

Not to mention she is in her 80s and doesn't have as much stamina as a younger performer. I'd rather for her to make sure her health is in check, especially at her age, rather than go onstage when she is ill.

Any word if she'll go on tonight?

Which two shows would that be? She has about a dozen lines in Night Music and sings The Miller's Son, certainly not the lead there. And in Gypsy, her character leaves at the end of act 1, again, certainly not a lead.

I would gladly play roles of such, indeed, featured sizes in a Broadway theater. As far as I'm concerned she was/is a major asset to both productions.

Always such silly arguments on here. Did I ever say "THE lead"? I said she played a lead in two major Broadway musicals. Larkin is on stage as much as Lansbury, who is above the title. Look at it any way you will, but Petra and June are lead roles. Not THE leads, but leads nonetheless.

There is a distinct different between a principal role and a lead role, Here I Am.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I have worked with Angela on two different shows for about three years total, and in over 500 performances with her, she was out only one time! She is the consummate pro, and give her a break. She is 85 years old, and on the best people in the world.!!!!

She is a class act and a damn nice person.

Long may she thrive on stage, film, etc., and shame on Hollywood for not providing her with another good film role. Each time she is on screen, it is a treat.
Do you know what happens when you let Veal Prince Orloff sit in an oven too long?

Is Angela definitely back tonight?

Also according to Karen Murphy's facebook, she is only 54 years old! Angela is 84. If Murphy ever goes on opposite Bernadette, she will be 8 years younger than her stage daughter. wow!

I would like to know also. Is she on or not? I am impatient to find out.

She was fantastic at the Thursday performance! If I didn't know she was just out due to illness, I would have had no idea...she was in top form.

Thank goodness! Thank you for alleviating my worries, both of you. I have seen the show before, of course, but I am bringing friends on Sunday, both of whom are major fans (well, one of them is casual, the other major) of hers who have not yet seen her in this part.

I would also like to point out, in reference to some comments above, that Angela's, like any other fine actor's, parts are not interchangeable.
