Finally some great casting news for this film. I'd see Anika do anything.

Good to know both she & Kelly Clarkson, for that fact, survived FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY and have both moved on to better things (and hopefully) better success!

Great. Now if they would only recast Deena with Renee Elise Goldsberry, they might be on their way to a good film.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Why do you say that? Lorrell is an underdeveloped role. She just has to sing good and project innocence.

I don't really like Anika's voice in her upper range. And Lorell has to sing high. I love Anika in certain things, but I don't think this will be one of them. Yeah, Anika's voice is very smooth and Deena like. For Lorell, I'm not looking for a copy of Loretta Divine, but SOMETHING in the ball park!

Exactly how I feel, Thetruth. Anika's voice doesn't suit Lorell at all. As much as I think she looks a tad too young and she's still a little innocent for any of these women, her voice would DEFINATELY suit Deena.

I think that most of us know her from Caroline, or Change, where she was playing a character who was significantly younger than her. So don't dismiss her as "too young and innocent" right away.

All I know is she must have sung "Ain't No Party" for her audition and/or screen test. It's Lorell's big number. And that's not an easy song to belt.

It's funny how people on this board are the first to celebrate the fact of a stage actor being cast in a major motion picture but when it comes to a film actor being cast in a stage show those same people are so quick to put it down.

I, for one, am extremely happy that Anika has been cast. I'm still saying my prayers that Fantasia doesn't get Effie, though. I can't think of anyone more wrong for that part. If they must have an American Idol, than why not consider Miss Hudson who is 10 times more talented than Fantasia.

I for one am so glad that this has finally been confirmed. I would have rather had her play Deena, but I think that Anika will be fierce as Lorrell. I mean, "Ain't No Party" could be taken down a bit for her. No one is Loretta Devine which Heather Headley proved with her screechtastic version of "Ain't No Party" at the Dreamgirls concert (if they re-recorded Billy why couldn't do the same for her, I ask you). Anyways, I can't wait to see Anika on the big screen again. Totally random, but have they cast anyone for Michele Morris who replaces Effie in the Dreams? Well, if no one has been then I suggest Tamyra Gray. Girl can sang and she would definately "fit" with Beyonce and Anika (of course, having the three of them performing together might be a little off since each could be Deena Jones). Lord, I'm gonna stop this rambling now...

At least at the beginning of the show, the Dreamettes are all supposed to be 18, and the show spans about 10 years. I think Anika will be able to cover 18-28 convincingly.

Gotham - I totally agree about Goldsberry as Deena. Not sure about Rose as Lorell. The song Ain't No Party really requires a lot of edge and bite and I've never heard that from Rose, though she does have a beautiful voice.

She was directed incredibly poorly, as was the entire production, since the Encores concert didn't go for the exaggerated performance style that Purlie requires. But musically, as I said, she soared through it.
