A new musical by Joe Iconis premiering next month at Barrington, a Blaxploitation-spoof musical that seems to have been written a vehicle for Annie Golden (I believe it was workshopped under the more specific title Annie Golden, Bounty Hunter). Also featuring Jeff McCarthy
... if this were in NYC, I'd be first in line for a ticket. Is anyone here checking it out during its run?

I'm not a huge Iconis fan, but I'm glad Golden is getting a lead role. She has a voice for his music, so perhaps it will be a good marriage. Though I'd see anything, good or not, where Annie Golden played a Pam Grier style Bounty Hunter. Thanks for posting Kad. Gigantic Golden fan, here.

I'm going! I got my ticket back in April, and I've been looking forward to it all summer. I've only had the opportunity to see Golden as a featured player in the past, so like Mildred I'm really happy to see her as a lead. I'll be sure to report back!

Love her. If this does pick up, it will be impressive given her age. Very Susan Boyle-esque.

They were rehearsing in the studio next to mine at Chelsea Studios recently. The music I heard from the hallway sounded like a lot of fun, and having been a huge fan of Annie Golden since I discovered the Assassins cast recording in high school, it was cool passing her in the hallway.

Is anyone else made uncomfortable by the prospect of a "Blaxploitation spoof" done by an entirely white creative team as a starring vehicle for a white actress?
The idea alone seems like using a device that exploited black culture to exploit it even further.

I imagine that the all-white aspect of the production is part and parcel with the "spoof" aspect.

I love Iconis and Golden!
I was just listening to Violet and wondering why she doesn't get more work.

I'm seeing the show next Saturday and I'm very excited!
They had to postpone their first preview, presumably from a change in directors (though the language is fairly vague). Hopefully all that gets worked out before the performance I'm seeing.

She's in Orange Is the New Black! She works plenty! I saw her, by herself, at South Comfort. Thought it was cool she flew solo.

Did anyone see the show this past weekend? I have tickets for the 25th and looking forward to it.

I always think of her in Milos Foreman's film "Hair" -- she is great in that. She's a true superstar -- hope this introduces her to a much wider audience.

She also was just recently in the ensemble of VIOLET at roundabout

I have A LOT (multitudes, really) to say about this show, but the most important thing I have to say is that I NEED this show to have a life beyond this production. I NEED this show to play in New York because first and foremost I NEED this show to have a CAST RECORDING! The music is awesome! This may be one of my best nights in a theater, and I saw Hamilton this year.

This show is EVERYTHING. It's one of the best musicals I've seen in the past few years. It's so original and absolutely hysterical. The score is delicious and infectious - like Peggy, I need a cast recording ASAP. Annie Golden is everything you'd expect and more. And the rest of the cast is just as insanely talented.
At several points, it had me crying tears of joy, which is something that rarely happens to me - there's nothing like that feeling of falling in love with theatre all over again. I know I may sound hyperbolic in this post, but I can't help showing how happy I still feel from seeing this show tonight.
I pray it'll come to New York soon so that even more people can experience it. A company like Second Stage would be a perfect fit.

I'm glad to read these good reports! I was up there for Pirates and saw the poster for this, and I was wishing I could extend my trip to see it. I hope it comes to NYC soon! I'm thinking that Broadway Bounty Hunter is more likely to come than Pirates because its smaller scale (I'm assuming) makes it more portable.

Couldn't agree more; it was blow-me-away fantastic.

I'm so glad you guys had a great experience, too! I feel like this show is more than the sum of its parts. I was blown way, and my affection for it has only increased with time. I want this to have a New York production just so I can see it again. (That, and a cast recording!)

With the run ending on Sunday, I made it back tonight to squeeze in a second viewing and I'm so glad I did. I had just as much fun seeing it tonight as I did last week, and if I had the time, I would be back again over the weekend.
This show is just so special. The score is going to be stuck in my head for a while to come - the lyrics are fun and witty and the music is so infectious. I was in the center of the front row this time, and I got to admire even more what fantastic work the ensemble is doing. They're all so sickeningly talented. Alan Greene from School of Rock has particularly great comedic timing, and I loved being up close to see his facial expressions. And then of course, there's Annie Golden. Just brilliant.
Point is, do see this before Sunday if you can! The theater is super close to a Peter Pan bus station, and it would make a great day trip.

I doubt that we'll get it anytime soon with Be More Chill coming Off-Broadway. But, hopefully after that. I'm kicking myself for missing it the first time.

I just got tickets to this Off-Broadway, and I'm glad to see all the positive reviews here! I know the show has probably changed a bit, but could someone give me a rough ballpark of running time?
