I was watching it the other night and thought "This could actually be a great musical". Maybe with someone like Donna or Marin as Katharine? Just seemed like good source material since movies-to-musicals aren't going to stop anytime soon.
Then they'll get Carly Simon to write the score, and it will be shades of "Nine to Five" all over again.
I thought of the 9-5 thing but this has a completely different tone to it, I think. It would have to be a "grown up musical". And if Simon wrote the score (Are you there, Broadway God, It's Me Jordan), I think it would have great music.
I think it's a fantastic idea- and you can just see whoever got to play the Joan Cusack role would be running away with the show.
The budget for hairspray would be astronomical. (the product not the show)
I have to say that it sounds like a good idea, but the writer would have to be phenomenal. Working Girl is probably the only contemporary film- alongside concidentally, another Melanie Griffith movie, Something Wild- that truly evokes the old Hollywood screwball films that revolved around blonde "bimbos" ala Judy Holliday. The script to Working Girl is so smart and has so many layers, that any adaptation would face a very uphill climb to stay true to its sharpness and intelligence. And yes, whomever played the Joan Cusack role would most likely have the show's biggest showstopper.
And it marked a hell of a departure for Harrison Ford, who had been working mainly in serious dramatic roles but with this one film, became the McDreamy of the 1980s.
It definitely could work. But I am of the mind that almost anything could work with the right cast and creative team. And I can see Katie Finneran as Cyn and probably getting another Tony for it.

I recently decided to revisit Regarding Henry. What a film. Without Working Girl it might have been someone else in that role.
I can't watch WORKING GIRL 'cause of this:
Cut it out, indeed!

I'd rather see a musical version of BORN YESTERSDAY.
As long as the keep Let The River Run in it I'm all for it.
"The hairspray bill alone would be enough to eat up all the profits from the Tilt-A-Whirl."
You know there is a show-stopping song and dance number for Cyn based on "Sometimes I sing and dance around the house in my underwear. Doesn't make me Madonna. Never will."
Right there is a Tony nomination! :)
I really feel this would end up in 9 to 5 or First Wives Club territory. Working Girl is really smart and sophisticated and I would hate for it to be lumbered down with "female empowerment" songs like the previously mentioned film to stage musicals.
It would have to be done completely opposite from 9 to 5 in every way. A very sophisticated score, no big "In The Heights" style dance numbers, no bubble gum at all. It would be risky but I think it could be pulled off.
