I'll be taking a short, mid-week, 3-day trip to NY in early fall and I plan on catching two shows. Since my time is so limited, I thought about seeing both shows in one day - a Wednesday matinee and a Wednesday night performance.
But then I thought that this might result in sensory overload. Can any of you hardcore theater junkies tell me if this is a good idea?

Posted: 7/15/06 at 1:25amI saw 3 performances in a tuesday and wednesday time slot, one for each time. Loved it! Maximize the time you have there and take full advantage if you can

Posted: 7/15/06 at 1:32amIMO, two shows is never too much. I try to fit in as much I possibly can. One year I actually got to see three shows on a Saturday. There was of course the matinee, then I saw an off-broadway performance that started at seven and I got the see another off-broadway performance that started at ten (it was "Stomp" I think, but it was a few years ago). That one time was the only time that I've tried or ben able to achieve three shows in one day but two shows on a Wednesday and two on a Saturday during any trip to NYC is quite normal for me.

I don't think so at all. I did it recently. There is plenty of time between a 2 pm show and an 8 pm show. Just choose wisely. I like going from comedy/lighter to darker shows. I find it harder to snap out of the serious and/or sad mindset into bright comedy, but I don't have a problem going the other way
. I actually schedule my trips around a Wednesday or Sunday if at all possible.

Thurs 8pm Tarzan
Fri 8pm Sandra Bernhard
Sat 2pm Doubt 5pm Slava's 8pm History Boys
Sun 3pm Spamalot -Gay pride opening at Bryant Park, but it doesn't count as a show i guess- 7pm Burleigh Grimes

Posted: 7/15/06 at 9:42amTry out the Fringe Festival sometimes. Lots of people see 4 to 5 shows in a single day. Personally I've done six over a weekend. As long as the shows are entertaining, there's no problem with stacking them up like that.

When I am in the City, I see a show each night for however many nights I'm there. I don't think two shows are too much. I have done the matinee/evening performance of two different shows a few times and LOVED it.
Have fun! See DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS!

Back in the day.....when there were movie palaces with stage shows in Times Square, like the Strand, The Capitol, The Paramount, Loew's State, I've been know to see a Broadway matinee, an evening performance on Broadway and, when possible, fitting in at least the stage show portion of whatever was running at one of the above theatre...I recall seeing Ethel Waters one time, and Juanita Hall another, in between Broadway shows on a Saturday. And as if that weren't enough, I recall seeing This Is Cinerama in the morning and, perhaps, something at one of the all-night movie theatres on 42nd St.

Posted: 7/15/06 at 1:04pmI saw Piazza and then went to Spelling Bee and it was fine. Of course, it helps if one of the shows is intermissionless or something.

I've seen 2 shows in one day several times and don't find it hard or difficult at all. The best way to enjoy all of both of the shows is to try and see two very different shows from one another. Another more comedy and fun, the other more serious.
Have fun & enjoy the shows!
#23re: Are two shows too much?
Posted: 7/15/06 at 3:35pmI've done that before. You'll be fine. It's fun catching two shows in a day.
