Black reel award?

If I were her I wouldn't even accept such nonsense. I would like to be treated like a human being/performer and win an award for my performance as a human being/performer. Can anyone explain to me why people would want to keep this separation intact? Where are the angry letters and reactions of black people now? The separation suddenly is ok when it's positive? Double standards. Because you either do want to keep the separation in tact, or you don't.

There's nothing to really explain or discuss.

Awards of this nature exist because someone felt there was a need and enough interest to recognize media that may otherwise be overlooked by the mainstream.

There should never be a need or interest in maintaining separations based on skin color. Period.

Audra's performance here was wonderful, just as tons of other performances in the entertainment industry, from film to music, the list of black actors/singers that have received mainstream awards is endless.... A lot of them are even considered as the best in their craft in the world. So this whole "overlooked" argument is nonsense.

Equality is not about creating your own separate world to build up self esteem. It is about joining the world. Only then you become a part of the world instead of thinking: "us against them". That is not the message we should teach our children. Why would you want your own separated bench in the bus, while that is exactly what you have been fighting against for so long? There are enough mixed seats for everyone, just like the endless list of mainstream awards for black people. Just jump on the same bus everyone does, join the world and the separation will disappear.

Ordinarily, I would agree that there shouldn't be a separation of race, but in an industry where non-Caucasians are hardly recognized for their work or even employed in major roles, I suppose it was up to them to create their own awards, programs, and networks, i.e. BET or Univision, so that such people can be recognized. Sad but true.

The saddest part of that is the message they are sending to their own children, that they are clearly not good enough to compete with the mainstream world.

A wrong message in my opinion, because as a white male, growing up my biggest influcences were people like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Oprah Winfrey, just to name a few. And the list goes on and on. Look at the tons of black singers leading the charts, playing lead roles in films and musicals today. If titles or awards are that important I would like to add that most people still call Whitney "the Voice", Michael "The King of pop", and Oprah the "Greatest talkshowhost".

My advice to young black people is; "don't listen to your parents, you are just as good as anyone in the mainstream world. Stay away from the "us against them mentality" and join the mainstream world instead of creating your own separate world".

Okay, so let's look at the winners for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.

A woman of color (Shohreh Aghdashloo) won in 2009 for House of Saddam, but the last African American woman to win was Cicely Tyson in 1994. And the number of women of color who have been nominated is incredibly low. Like other posters said, an award like this was created because Black performers are not being recognized for their work by the mainstream media. The problem is not that there is a Black Reel Award, the problem is that there is a NEED for a separate system of awards.

Dave how old are you anyway? I ask because it seems odd you would have a problem with this, even if you are white. If you're barely in your twenties then I could understand you being oblivious to history but if you're older than say, thirty I would think you would know why awards like Black Reel were created.

African Americans are roughly 10% of the general population. Then there are many more minority groups such as Asian Americans, Indian Americans, etc. It's only logical that this translates to the amount of people in the business, awards, etc. We could basically say that it is interesting that there are so many black people in the entertainment industry, winning all kinds of mainstream awards, the list is endless. It's all about talent, nobody in the world cared about skin color whatsoever when Beyonce, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince, Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Lionel Richie, Wynton Marsalis, Etta james, Jay-z, Usher, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, John Legend, Denzel Washington, Sidney Poitier, Forest Whitaker,Morgan Freeman, Diahann Carroll, Jennifer Holliday, Audra McDonald, Patina Miller, Whoopi Goldberg, etc, etc, etc, collected all of their multiple mainstream awards!

There is no need for separate awards whatsoever. The world does not compare talent by skin color.

And age doesn't have anything to do with understanding that keeping this separation intact is wrong.

It's about market, not skin color. Just as there are movies (Tyler Perry) and cable programming (BET) targeted for the African-American audience, there are also award shows. It's not really a big deal. It is simply recognizing outstanding performances in a minority represented market. Get over it.

Am I reading you right? Are you saying the problem isn't that people are oppressed, but that people who are oppressed stick together and find comfort and strength in numbers? That the only thing that has held them down and kept them back is that *they* haven't "joined the world"?

I mean, Audra has enough Tonys to juggle so I don't think you have to worry your empty little had if a black organization wants to give her an award for the excellent job she did in a role where her skin color DID in fact come up with many viewers who are not as enlightened (pun intended) as yourself Dave.

The world makes no difference in skin color? Uh...yes they do and there have been numerous instances in the national news that shows this to be true. These awards wouldn't be created if there wasn't a feeling of a need for them. It's not saying that black people can't make it in the mainstream, it's just showing appreciation to the performances by African Americans that might have been ignored in the mainstream where they are seldom shown true appreciation (this is getting better but there's still so far to go). I mean there is a Latin VMAs so why can't there be a Black Reel Awards? Anyway, good job Audra, you deserve this and all the awards you receive!
