^ What the heck? Avenue Q opened to very positive reviews, especially from the Times. Wicked opened to mixed reviews, and really...Avenue Q deserved the award. It was the stronger show, with the stronger score. The Tonys called Wicked for what it was, an overblown, yet well designed mess with a strong leading lady who rose above the material.

"But even more kudos to Wicked, which should've definitely won Best Score (if not Best Musical) and is still selling out the Gershwin"

Sorry but that awards still needs to be handed back to CAROLINE OR CHANGE. As do quite a few other Tony awards from that season.

And btw, what ever happened to the planned La Cage revival? Wasn't THAT supposed to fill up the Golden?

The LA CAGE revival is planned for Spring 2010. If it is going into the Golden, as rumored, OLEANNA still has several months to run there (I'm not sure whether OLEANNA is a limited run or not...I don't remember reading anything about that in the press releases).

Oleanna hasn't been advertised as a limited engagement and is currently selling through March 7th.

I just think it was Stephen Schwartz's turn for a Tony. But Caroline or Change was definitely phenomenal and deserved more recognition. I was relatively young when I saw it so I probably didn't appreciate it as much as I should have.

Did you see Show Business: The Road to Broadway, when all the critics were trash talking Avenue Q and saying it wasn't going to last? I didn't say it got bad reviews, I just said that upon intially hearing about it, the critics scoffed at it.

And I definitely don't think that Wicked is a mess...maybe a little overblown, but many people go to the theater for the spectacle. Wicked manages to be a spectacle and teach a lesson about perception and judging others based on who they are, not what they look like. Cliched values, yes, but still important ones.

^Is that REALLY ALL you picked up from Wicked? Don't judge people based on their looks? PLEASE tell me people get more of a message than this when they see shows... please!

Wicked is a hot mess. There are a handful of decent songs, but the horrible lyrics outweigh even the strongest of melodies. AVENUE Q is just a stronger show all around, although the shows are totally different. I still wish Caroline, or Change had won. It was the best show that season, hands down.

Any word on if the LA production of Parade is wanting to transfer? I know it hasn't opened yet, but is it being done as a "tryout?" I know it can't open this season because of TR Knight's commitments, but still.

"anyone think they should change the lyric in the finale to "This Show!" is only for now?"

im actually hoping they do that it would be kinda funny...

Also im tired of people saying Wicked should have beat Q.
now I LOVE wicked. Defying gravity gives me chills everytime I see it but Wickeds story was extremly jumbled.

*SPOILERS*

When Elphaba becomes the "wicked witch" (Quoutations used for she was only evil by word of mouth) at the end of act 1 it is because she knows the Wizard is responsible for locking up the animals and has no real powers. So she wants to fight the Wizard and free all the animals.
Now thats understandable and can make sense.

Heres where I got to scratching my head..The reason the Wizard locked up the Animals is because "where I (wizard) come from" Common Enemies bring people together, So he just said Animals are bad so him and ozians can have a enemy...?

That just seems extremly rushed together and not thought out 100%.
Please dont tell me the book is like that because the book is not like that at all. Their are similarities but its not like the staged story.

Q's story altough somewhat silly (using pupperty) is relevant to the real world showing us everyday problems and situations, even though through exageration.

Q had a great score. Talented actors. and a entertaing and relevant story.

Wicked had a OK score ( A few great songs. the rest is fluff)
A mediocre story.
But one BREATHTAKING WAY of turning a green girl wicked.

I honestly think w/o defying gravity, Wicked might not even be as popular as it is today.

^The common enemy is Elphaba, not the animals. The animals represent any sort of represed body of people (Jews in Nazi Germany, for example), and the Wizard represents a powerless leader (Like Hitler, for another WWII example). Does anyone get this? WICKED REPRESENTS WWII!!!!!

Heh. Quite literally, in fact.

jagfkb, I have heard of various connections between Wicked and other political/historical events. I do think that Wicked is much more then not judging people based upon how they look.

Wicked, i feel, deserved a tony for best score, or best musical. It's universal and i think it's got a great score, great story (i know people don't like it much) and think it is a great night out at the theatre (theater).

but the tony's gone now..but wicked's still running, in multiple places.

The score really not THAT good. It's filled with power ballads that have the ability to put enormous amounts of damage on their vocal cords. As someone else has put it it's vocal pyrotechnics.
