Posted: 7/3/04 at 10:19pmWell, J - Caroline isn't aimed at children. It's a grown up musical with no flashy effects. It's what's called a character study. Can you say that? CHAR-AC-TER STU-DY. Good boy.

You're right shesings, I do apologize.
Where is my loyaltly.
Avenue Q is better because:
1.) It has a totally original book that was not romotely adapted from a book that was based on a movie that was based on another book
2.) ALL the songs are catchy, hummable, and reflective of today's society unlike 3 or 4 fantastic songs in an otherwise so-so score
3.) Avenue Q not only treats their fans with courtesy, but the fans of Avenue Q also do not name-call or force others to worship their show
Have a Happy July 4th everyone!

Well, someone's gotta do it.
Who was it who called me Barbara Billingsley? I should get that on a t-shirt.

Posted: 7/4/04 at 2:54amgirl no you did-in! taboo was the best score of the past five years at least, and that it hasn't gotton it's props yet is a bloody crime. i think we'll see who and what will stand the test of time, and i can tell you that as much as i enjoyed watching wicked, it's gonna be collecting dust in the record bins, b/c that score will not survive. ave q and caroline will certainly be remembered. one day audiences will be ready for caroline- that it hasn't been able to flourish is quite a loss.

At the risk of repeating what may have already been said elsewhere, WICKED is a charming piece of packaged work, designed for the tourist trade by providing a lot of splashy special effects, gorgeous costumes, a fun set, and a bland but listenable score. Everything is lovely to look at. It's inoffensive and therefore an easy sell to large groups like, oh, I dunno, the Republican National Convention. But once you start stripping away all the flash, there ain't much there, guys.
Q, on the other hand, starts from the premise that it ain't much to begin with and lets you grow with it. It's got charm, wit, and a cohesive style, unlike WICKED's inability to pull all of its creativity into a single stream. I seriously doubt either show will make it into the regional theatre market (I dont know many companies that would want to tackle WICKED, and Q is a little too New York oriented to play in the Heartland), but Q stands a better chance of being remembered at all than WICKED.
