J-
I would love to know how old you are.
Now I do think Caroline is a brilliant show. I love Tesori but i also love Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez.
I have to say that Avenue Q will appeal to my age group.
Those of us who grew up watching Sesame Street when it first started.
I also think it is one of the most touching, creative and edgy shows i have seen in a very long time. The more that i listen to the cd the more i love it.
I think it deserved all three Tonys.
Tesori won a Drama Desk for Caroline so she did win an award and she won one for Millie.
Happy 4TH of July.

I think that Schwartz is talented but my favorites of his are Pippin and the Bakers Wife! Pippin is one of my favorite shows of all time. Wicked sadly was not a favorite.
I did not love Wicked but i liked it.
Is it better then Q? Are you on drugs?
I think the only show that should have tied with Q was Caroline or Change.

Ya know J., this post actually made me sad. Sad becuase a show which tries to make people laugh and has enteratined so many has made you so furious. Sad because you feel that somebody should win the Tony Award on experience alone, instead of the quality of their work. Sad because you've totally dismissed CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. Sad because you seem to like spectacle over story.
Then I cheered up when I realized that you post was "Full of sound and fury signifying NOTHING!"

Posted: 7/4/04 at 6:39pmI get every post but the last one. I am 19 and like I said, I like the idea of AVENUE SCREW, I just think WICKED is a better show. Also, I think most people agree that WICKED is better music. Stephen Schwartz deserves a Tony award for what he's done and that's a fact.

J,
Honey you are 19 and a child. Wicked was a great show for someone your age.
Avenue Q is better for adults.![]()
PS I LOVE SCHWARTZ! He is also very nice I had the opportunity to meet him. My favorite show of all time is Pippin and I wish Wicked was as strong.
Don't misunderstand me. Wicked is a very entertaining show. If i was 19 I would have loved it too. I am part of the old crows of this board and i enjoyed Avenue SCREW as you call it much better.

Posted: 7/4/04 at 6:51pmWicked is a better show. However, just because a show didn't get a tony, doesn't mean it isn't good. Annie, the most irritating show in existance got four. We aren't in art for the the awards.

Sorry wrong show.![]()
PS If you bash my favorite show you will have to deal with my wrath. Watch out kid. I bite!
Wicked is a better show to 11-19 year olds and very conservative Bush lovers.
Wicked is a good show but Avenue Q is a must see show for liberal adults.

Alright -- saw Wicked, loved it. Saw Avenue Q and loved that too. I loved them on two very different levels though. They are two VERY different shows and really can't be compared to each other. The music/lyrics to Avenue Q are brilliant and hysterical (and sometimes faaaar too truthful), but then again, the music to Wicked is beautiful as well -- just beautiful in a different sense.
However, that's just the way *I* see it. lol
Now that I'm done making no sense whatsoever (as I seem to be doing lately! lol) I'm going to get all hoochied up and ready to go out and party!

Posted: 7/4/04 at 7:16pmYou're right. They are very different. Here's a rational conclusion that I bet everyone agrees with: WICKED's music is beautiful and powerful and AVENUE SCREW's music is clever and and funny. I guess I like WICKED better though cause I can listen to it on the train and AVENUE SCREW is better if you hear it in a live theatre. Updated On: 7/4/04 at 07:16 PM

J-
Avenue Q has jokes that you will understand when you are older!
Wicked is a very entertaining show. The sets were fantastic and it was a glitzy extravganza.
I loved Kristin and Idina and the big glorious sets.
Avenue Q hit a chord with me. I grew up with Sesame Street and found the show one of the most original and touching shows i have ever seen.
There was no glitz in Avenue Q! It was just clever, funny, touching and great acting and singing by the entire cast.
Avenue Q moved me on so many levels.
Hopefully it will still be running when you are my age.

J said "Im mostly pissed because Stephen Schwartz has been in this business since the 70s and has not won a single tony award for all his music."
Well, as far as I know , the Tony Award goes to the specific show and not an accumulation of the persons work.
As far as his not getting one before: Pippin lost to A Little Night Music - correct decision, Godspell lost to Annie - correct decision , Rags lost to Les Miserables - correct decision. The only one that I thought he might have won for was Working, and even thats debatable. As for Ave. Q, although I like Wicked, I thought Ave. Q had a much better score.
As far as not winning a Tony Award, it shouldn't be important. Any piece of Art should be judged on its own merit and not by the number of awards it wins. If you look at plays of the 17th and 18th century , some of the most successful shows of the times are now long forgotten, while shows that were initially panned are still performed today. Time will pick out the shows that survive, and it will have virtually nothing to do with the number of awards they won when they was first performed.

>> Godspell lost to Annie - correct decision
I sometimes wonder -- having worked on too many ANNIEs and just now getting a crack at GODSPELL. :)
But to say:
>> I bet everyone agrees with: WICKED's music is beautiful and powerful
Well, sorry, friend, but no. Having read the book, I really, really wanted to like WICKED, and I left the theatre disappointed. You saw it otherwise, and that's fine, but to me, the score was just... plain.

Posted: 7/4/04 at 7:49pmIt's not a computer voting. The voters have an idea of the person's accumulated work and about the person themselves when they vote. Stephen Schwartz will have one one day and it will be a great day!

Posted: 7/4/04 at 8:05pmi love stephen schwartz' previous work and was really rooting for him when I heard he was doing Wicked. this was before I heard the score. i'm pulling for him to win his Tony someday, but I did not want to him to win it for Wicked, which I think may be his weakest score. sadly the Tony voters do take full body of work into consideration, so I thought he might have won for that reason. luckily it didn't happen. Avenue Q may not have been the best score, but it was surely better than Wicked's. Schwartz will have his day, and it will be for a score that deserves it. Maybe if Children of Eden ever makes it to Broadway.

Posted: 7/4/04 at 8:14pmas for Scwartz winning best score for Children of Eden, look at what happened with Assassins this year, being considered as a Revival, and therefore not eligible for best score. and though if Children ever does make it to broadway, I believe it SHOULD win, but I see Children being considered as a Revival, therefore ruining Schwartz's chances in that department.
#72re: Avenue Screw
Posted: 7/4/04 at 8:16pmalthough they only throw them im revival i think if they were POPULAR and well known for their original run elsewhere. CHILDREN OF EDEN played for a very short time right?

Posted: 7/4/04 at 10:52pmAs much as I love Schwartz and all of his work, Wicked shouldn't have won any award. I love Wicked, but Caroline or Change blew it out the water, and I've only heard the cast recording. It is amazing and incredibly complex. Q is catchy and nice to listen to but if you want to think and enjoy a higher level of theater. Caroline or Change all the way. The score is beautiful and much better than Q and Wicked, and the lyrics (since it is all music) are extremely intellegent (thanks to the wonderful Tony Kushner). Just idea of the show beats both Q and Wicked. Tonya Pinkins really deserved best actress. Stupid producers looking after their wallets, rather than the sake of intellegent theater. I like Q, but part of it makes me think it demeens theater. There's my speil, enjoy.
