This is one of the more interesting plays I’ve seen in quite some time. For the first twenty minutes or so, I genuinely could not decide whether I was on board with the story, the characters, or even the humor. But once Becky Shaw herself enters in the second scene, you can practically feel the audience lean in as the play suddenly clicks into place.
The show is unapologetically offensive and packed with dark, razor-sharp humor. If that’s your kind of comedy, as it is mine, chances are you’ll have a great time with this play. If darker humor isn’t your thing, though, this probably won’t be your cup of tea.
The entire cast is terrific, with Alden Ehrenreich being the standout, largely due to the fact that he gets the juiciest material to work with. It is also always a pleasure to see Linda Emond onstage, and she delivers some especially strong moments toward the end of the play.
Like I said, this definitely won’t work for everyone, but I found plenty to enjoy and laughed a lot throughout.
