There is always some revival that everyone seems to think is a bad idea at first. And then it turns into the hit of the season.
I'm not saying that will be the case with Whorehouse, I'm just saying we know nothing about this production. It could end being a Pippin level re-imagining or a lazy Bye Bye Birdie style rehash.
I don't think the idea of reviving it is a bad decision. It's well liked and I'm sure they're going to use I Will Always Love You in the marketing.
I love it. Love the show, as long as they don't try to update it, leave it as a period piece, it'll be fine.
I vote for Emily Skinner for Mona, though I expect they'll go for a name. Mullally is the only Mona mentioned that I see working, she reads younger than her age, imo. Hilty would also be great in the role, though. She's in her 30s and reads mature to me. Pasquale for Ed Earl?
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
If we're gonna plug in a country star, my vote is Trisha Yearwood. Mostly cause I love her cooking show. I know that has nothing to do with anything, but whatevs.
I wonder if Carlin Glynn read older in '78 because late 30's seemed older then. I think Krakowski would be a great choice, but since she's the doyenne of sitcoms, perhaps it will not be. There's a part of me that kinda wants to see Tonya Pinkins as Miss Mona, though I've only seen her play cold, tough women.
Tonya Pinkins would be inspired! I think she knows how to have fun, she was one of the funniest parts of ENCHANTED, and of course we know she can easily sell a song like "The Bus from Amarillo."
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I do know for a fact that Reba was here in NYC this past week. She was seen at Jersey Boys where she enjoyed the show for the 5th time. Interesting that this news follows right on the heels of her visit. Dontcha think?
If we are going to keep American Musical Theater alive, we need to see more than revivals being brought to Broadway in 2015.
American Musical Theatre has survived MUCH worse. There is nothing fatalist in a revival-heavy season. Already announced are An American in Paris, Fun Home, Honeymoon in Vegas and The Last Ship. Holler If You Hear Me came and went and the summer's not even over yet.
I'd love to see Emily Skinner as Mona, but I don't see that actually happening. Reba may be a bit long in the tooth, but she would still nail it. I just don't think Krakowski is right for the role. I don't know what her acting is like, but I'd LOVE to hear Shania Twain sing the part. She turns 50 next year, so she's definitely in the right age range.
And Fuschia Walker as Jewel, please. kthnx

There aren't even an extraordinary amount of revivals announced for this season, and two of the major ones (On the 20th Century and King & I) are at revival-based non-profits.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
I thought it felt like a very heavy revival season this year-couple that with the fact there seems to be a shortage of theaters. (You have "On the Town," "The King and I," "On the Twentieth Century" and "Side Show".) I'd wait until fall-and maybe do an out of town engagement while they're at it.
Did anyone see the tour that ran in the late nineties with Ann-Margret and Gary Sandy? Wasn't that supposed to be Broadway-bound? What happened? It had a great poster, I remember, with Ann on a giant Texas flag roaring at the camera.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
~ Muhammad Ali
In a 1982 book, “The Whorehouse Papers,” Mr. King described his frustrations with the creative process of the theater, writing that his play was “tinkered with, danced on, sang at, barked and snarled at, chopped up, tricked up, and camped up until I can hardly recognize the .?.?. thing". It is a pity now is out of print. Just amazing!
@Borstal That tour was not very good. Ann Margaret walked thru it and the pacing of the show was very slow. There is stuff out there for you to check it out.
@Will .. The book is out of print but you can pick a used copies of it on amazon for a few dollars. Mr King just did not like the collaborative aspect of putting on a show. It is a fun and silly quick read.
I saw the national tour in 1999 (in San Antonio, TX) with Ann Margret as Miss Mona. I don't remember much about it.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
While re watching old episodes of The Simpsons this weekend I was struck by how great Beverly D'Angelo would be as Miss Mona, after being reminded of her country vocals as Lurleen Lumpkin.
