You know, when this first leaked I was all "meh" about, but at this point I realize I'd rather go see another "Gypsy" film than I would a movie version of Rock of Ages.
I wonder if they'll consider restoring a cut song or two. Most of them I don't really care about, but I really like "Mama's Talkin' Soft."

This is very exciting. I am still concerned about her singing though and if she will have the power to pull off some of the score. She's my favorite performer and Gypsy is near the top of my list in terms of shows, so I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Nice work, goth. I chortled, chuckled, then guffawed.

Grandma's talkin' loud! Grandma cannot hear! Grandma broke a hip! Grandma's got the gout! Grandma's getting old - Grandma... Grandma... Grandma's hanging tough! Grandma cannot move. Grandma's getting old. Grandma.... Grandma's gotta get old!
I'm bothered by the fact that the woman is decades too old for the role. Will they change the lyrics to fit? "Have some BenGay, Mr Goldstone?"
(edit: You beat me to the punch, PRS. Nice one.)

I think it will be in her best interest to just skew much older for everyone in it. I hear they are looking at Michelle Pfeiffer for Louise and Megan Mullally for Baby June.

The Streisand casting does pose some problems for casting of Herbie. Who is not a big enough star to overshadow Streisand yet looks a relevant age as compared to Streisand. I'm thinking Jackie Mason as Herbie.
Who will they get to play her dad at the beginning? Maybe Harry Morgan? He's still alive, right?

Arthur Laurents mentioned Tom Hanks as a possible choice for Herbie.

I think Tom Hanks would be a better Tulsa. He's more age-appropriate for that.

"Who will they get to play her dad at the beginning?"
Mickey Rooney
I'd MUCH rather see Kevin Kline as Herbie. As mentioned in the prior thread, Anne Hathaway as Louise seems like a great idea. Maybe Ernest Borgnine could play Rose's father? He's about the only working actor old enough...

Word on the street is that they're using the Lucille Ball Mame film technique - cheesecloth and vaseline.

What are you trying to do, madbrian, kill Patti Lupone?

As Reggie said in another thread - "The hysterical Cole Escola's tweet re Barbra directing herself in it: 'I'm glad Gypsy will finally be done with an all beige palette and extreme soft-focus like it was meant to be seen.' "
Patti was 57 or 58 when she played Rose. According to IMDB there's only seven years between her and Barbra.
That said, I remember reading somewhere that Rose is 29 when the show starts. Magic of the theatre.

True, but while all the women who've played Rose on stage were arguably too old, there's still a difference between playing younger on stage than playing younger on film. Patti didn't have to worry about close-ups.
Of course, regardless of whether or not this is a masterpiece or a disaster, I'll probably see it in the theaters at least five times.

If you're going that young and that theatrical for Tulsa, then I demand Tony Yazbeck and I want his clothes to gradually fall of during his number until he's down to his dance belt and a tube of Chap-Stik, basically.
