Noo!!!
Since most Broadway shows have their cast recording signing at this location I thought I would post this.
Sad day
WHAT?! This is REALLY upsetting. It's a fantastic store.
I was there just this morning to buy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I love that store! It's very upsetting.
No! This B&N is one of my favorites in Manhattan. This is sad news.
Oh no! This is so sad - I love this store. Are we coming now to a time where we are going to say, "Remember going to a bookstore? Remember going to a record store?"
If Barnes and Noble can't afford the rent, who can? That speaks volumes (no pun intended)
Record stores are few and far between. Never thought I'd be looking for my new cd's at Walmart.
Nooooo! This is my favorite Barnes & Noble in the city.
I'm hugely upset to hear this. A great place to see free performances, get great movies, find cast albums, read, and pee.
So sad. After the demise of Virgin Megastore, this was a favorite place to browse, buy and PEE! It will be missed.
In some ways, I love this.
New York (and every other major city) used to have dozens of independent bookstores that were put out-of-business by Barnes and Noble and Borders. Now, where I live in Los Angeles, half of the major Borders bookstore is empty shelves. I asked the manager what happened and he said "The internet is killing us." I thought he meant Amazon and he said "Now, anybody can set up an online bookstore and compete with us."
And it occurred to me many of those online stores are run by the guys Borders put out of business.
From Jurassic Park -
Ian: "God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs." Ellie: "Dinosaurs eat man… woman inherits the earth..."
There was an "interesting" NYT piece about this. Many of the people interviewed lamented the store's closing, but admitted never buying anything there anyway. One guy said he's been reading a book -- one chapter a week -- at the store because he didn't want to pay for it! Other people said they browsed and then went home and ordered from Amazon. Sad.
So will this mean the return of the independent book store?
Interesting. It's a huge space, so I wonder what they would put in there? It was a great pre/post show place to hang out before seeing a show at Lincoln Center.
With Borders in the tank I thought Barnes & Noble were the survivors! In a few years there won't be a bookstore left in North America.
I said it in another thread, but watch it turn into another huge Duane Reade.

I do quite a bit of business with Amazon, but there's nothing like picking up a book and thumbing through it before you buy it. Amazon doesn't always give enough info for their books or CD's.
Where will the cast recording signings and talkbacks/performances etc take place now if anywhere?
Amazon is the new Wal-Mart. Except they really ARE taking over the world.
I wanted the board game Dominion, except it was $45 at my local board game store. Amazon had it for under $28. I couldn't afford it at $45, but I could at $28. What was I to do???

But did you spend money there? :-| That was kinda the issue. These behemoths encouraged people to hang out, but too many didn't buy anything.
I watched the delivery guys cart in two huge boxes to my neighbor's place. Her father had sent her a vacuum cleaner. Through Amazon. Because he has free delivery. They are taking over.
it's going to become a Century 21 ... now you can buy a last minute outfit to wear to the ballet if you're in a rush!

The Barnes and Noble in Union square has a huge seating area and stage thing for performances/signings.
...... Century 21? Disgusting. I can't believe the neighborhood board is approving that. Its tackiness absolutely doesn't fit the area at all. Especially after the wonderful Apple store that just went up across the street.
True. Century 21 is a bit of a mess, but it is always busy and doing business. Oh well.
There's a clothing chain century 21? Like the real estate company. Plus, isn't there already a Forever 21?
Next, there'll be one called Banana Remax Express. Or Coldwell Limited Banker.
