So I'm deciding between three shows for my birthday next month and I need some input.
Beetlejuice vs.Tootsie vs. Ain't Too Proud (which only started previews last week? and I'm already hearing great things!)Â
Help!
I've also already seen a bunch of shows I believe would be recommended, so I'm really trying to decide between these three. I can only see one.

From what I have read about these shows, I would vote for "Tootsie".

Friends in D.C. really had a lot of fun at "Beetlejuice" when it was at the National last fall. And I've loved the inventive work of Alex Timbers, who has staged "Oh, Hello!", "Peter and the Starcatcher", "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson" and "Here Lies Love"...I'd go for the Juice.

Tootsie hands down, while I haven't seen any of them i have heard nothing but bad things about Beetlejuice and Aint Too Proud. They were both panned by critics and audiences alike. Tootsie has pretty positive word of mouth and will likely be real competitor for the Best Musical Tony and Santino will likely take home Best Actor in a musical. See Tootsie, its not even a question in my mind!

I'd choose Tootsie! I saw it in Chicago and adored it!

Great things about Ain't too Proud? From whom. Certainly not here.
I agree, Tootsie seems like the best of the bunch.

If those are our three choices, then yep, Tootsie.

I saw both Beetlejuice in DC and Tootsie in Chicago, didn't care for Ain't Too Proud. My vote goes to Tootsie. It's a better written show and genuinely funny. Beetlejuice leans more towards cheap laughs and movie references. It wasn't terrible, but could be better. That said, both shows are going through rewrites. Who knows, maybe they'll manage to fix Beetlejuice somehow.

Tootsie. Saw it twice in Chicago and will no doubt see it many more times. Loved everything about it.

Tootsie all the way. The production was hilarious in Chicago, and it's likely to be one of the big nominees (and hopefully winners) at the Tonys this year.

Tootsie is a Broadway show with many references to other Broadway shows. It's a delight.
When Dorothy first appears in the first act anthem I WON'T LET YOU DOWN at the New 42nd Street Studios, you will be smitten by Fontana's portrayal.

From people who have seen it....the opinions on here aren’t the highest opinions you know. People have different tastes.

So our opinions aren’t the highest so you decide to ask us what to see? Makes sense. Good luck with whatever you end up seeing.

it it does make sense because people can get opinions from other places, it doesn’t have to be just these boards. There’s more than one outlet for asking theater-related questions. This happens to be one to take into account.

If our opinions don’t matter, why are you asking for it then? Everyone said Tootsie, take it or leave it. Ain’t too proud has not received good reviews from anything. Stan twitter is just hyping it up.
See Tootsie. But I doubt you will.
So have fun at Ain’t too proud.

Yeah I don't listen to stan twitter, I barely know what it is. Three people I've spoken to IN PERSON have told me how much they like ATP. Does everyone here assume everyone who has a differing opinion or (admittedly) acts a little less mature than they should is part of stan twitter, or is that age? Never assume anything. As I said, you can ask for opinions from anywhere and from anyone. It doesn't have to be one source, and that one source is not the sole authority.

Having seen all of them out of town, I would recommend Tootsie. Santino is such a star!

Posted: 3/5/19 at 5:22pmTootsie. It got great reviews out of town, and the cast and creative are great. Don’t know much about Beetlejuice other than that it was not warmly received out of town, however I’m looking forward to seeing it for the technical elements. I saw Ain’t Too Proud on Broadway last week and found it to be absolutely awful.

Depends on what you like. If you want something that's more irreverent funny - go for Beetlejuice. I had friends who saw it in DC and raved about it.

I'd also say it depends on your personal tastes as these are 3 very different shows. I saw Ain't Too Proud last week and thought it was ok. I certainly didn't hate it. Already have a Beetlejuice ticket that I got for $33 though I would not have bought a ticket this early without that deal. I'm on the fence about Tootsie due to the sudden death of a friend who was involved with the show.

If you want big, bright musical comedy, go for Tootsie! I saw it is it's pre-Broadway run in Chicago and loved it.. (even bought a t-shirt!). I do fear that it may get a little lost in the Marquis.. but it is still worth it for Santino Fontana's brilliant performance alone.. Also I'm always a sucker for a David Yazbeck score!
Ain't Too Proud would be up the line of Beautiful, Motown, Jersey Boys, etc.. Not my cup of tea, but if you do enjoy the Bio-Musical genre, I have heard nothing but positive word of mouth.
Beetlejuice received some mixed notices in DC and (admittedly), i am not a fan of the movie... so its much lower on my must-see list..

Tootsie. My only complaint about the out of town try out was that the amazing Michael McGrath was underused. Beetlejuice, if you must. Ain't Too Proud isn't worth it.

I've only seen Beetlejuice but I wouldn't recommend it. I was extremely disappointed. It was kind of a mess.
I've heard decent things about Ain't To Proud To Beg but I just can't really get excited over jukebox musicals these days.
I'd go with Tootsie. I keep hearing great things. It's at the top of my list as well.
