Everyone on Broadway has a chance. If they aren't good they shouldn't be known for it, but if they're really good they should be reconized for their outstanding work.
Agreed. Friedman got ripped off. She was transcendent!

Maria gets a tony nomination and award from me!!!!
How did Patti Lupone made the role her own? Oh yeah, she made the role of Mrs. Lovett slutty? please. I agree that Patti is extremely talented, she is one of my favorite singers, her Evita was just amazing. But the truth is, that if any unknown actress would be playing Mrs Lovett the same way Patti is doing it, people would say she is trashy. Angela Lansbury was classier. Although Lupone is a better singer i think.
Ummm...wow. I think I almost vomited.
Angela Lansbury was a loud, brash, almost dirty Lovett who was extremely controlling. She was boastful and extremely intelligent. She comanded the stage and was almost more intimidating than Sweeney.
Patti took that role and made Lovett a much more deviantly simple woman. She never loses her cool and always remains very contained. She doesn't yell. She's cunning and quick and sultry has Sweeney wrapped around her finger up until the very end.
I never once found Lansbury's Lovett to be scary. She's intimidating.
Patti's Lovett sent chills up my spine and scared the sh*t out of me.
She's not slutty. Those with amateur tastes may think so...but they can't see beneath the exterior.
Patti completely re-invented a role that had been trademarked by a legend.
If there is one Tony-worthy actress this year...it is Patti LuPone.
But in re-inventing the role, Lupone lost it's intended function: the comic relief.
As I said in a previous post, she's funny and does deliver a fantastic performance, but I feel that she concentrated so hard on making Lovett her own that she missed what the role the character is supposed to play in the production.
I thought the woman was plenty funny.
And, perhaps, Doyle felt like he wanted to take things in a different direction.
This version is far darker than the original SWEENEY. So, perhaps things won't seem as funny as they did in the original when everything was bigger and broader.
If LuPone was as big with Lovett as Lansbury was, it wouldn't fit into this production.
^this is true.
Nonetheless, I think Patti lost the essence of the character and took it somewhere else. I also found her to be distracted and as if she almost was bored onstage. Lansbury's Lovett was amazing, but Patti turned it into something that I just don't like. All a matter of opinion. No one is right or wrong.
I feel Foanatic is the one of the only ones posting in this thread that really understands Patti's Lovett.
If you want to see Patti's big overdone Lovett, then you better watch the concert DVD with Hearn.
Her new Lovett is so different. If she played her Lovett like she did in concert for the new revival, she would be very out of place. Patti does not steal the shine in this production, and she wants it that way. She is subtle, but conniving, and knows exactly what she's doing. She is very funny in the revival, as she get laughs where the there wouldn't usually be laughs.

ljay - I also really loved Patti in Sweeney. Count me in as someone who really got something from Patti's portrayal of Lovett. It was subtle, yet captivating. I am still talking about it 2 months after seeing the show! She wasn't over the top and she fit the show perfectly, in my opinion. Overall, I just loved all of Sweeney. That was the first time I've ever left a theatre and had nothing but good things to say. I loved all of Sweeney.
As far as the other nominees: I live in Florida and Sweeney was the only show I got to see, so I have no comment. I wish I lived closer!
Patti LuPone, hands down.
No other performance - male or female - has even come close. It's the best Broadway performance of the year, hands down. BRILLIANT.
Foa also thinks Julia Roberts' play is amazing. I bet he is still upset she didn't get nominated. And i must admit i thought she'd be nominated, just because they wanted to have her at the Tony Award ceremony.
Notice you say I think the *play* is amazing. Yes, I do.
Do I think this revival is amazing? No. It's a fine production...but no more than that.
If anything, the only Tony-worthy performance I saw was Bradley Cooper although I do think Roberts did a fine job and should be applauded for going out there and trying something so much harder than film acting. She's proved herself as an actress to me.
Don't attack my tastes muscle. Ask a lot of ACTUAL educated theatre fans on this board and they'll tell you how THREE DAYS OF RAIN is Richard Greenberg's most intellectually superb play. So...I could understand why you wouldn't get it.
Every time you open your mouth you spew trash. Then again...all I hear is: "Blah Blah BOMBAY DREAMS...Blah Blah Brooke Sheilds...Blah Blah Tamrya Gray...Blah Blah SHAKALAKA BABY...Blah Blah I don't know sh*t."
Your taste is FAR FAR FAR FAR below the level mine is on. Don't attack my taste because yours has a horrific reputation on this board.
I know more about theatre than you can ever dream to know or appreciate. I feel bad for helpless boobs like you with nothing more than a plebian, one-dimensional view of theatre.
You're pathetic.
Im over Bombay Dreams, i got tired of it. You are pathetic darling. Im also over you and your bad taste for theatre. Pathetic is to hide behind a picture of someone else all the time, and to be a mean, rude person. Also, i talk about shows that i have seen, you haven't seen Bombay Dreams with Tamyra Gray, or Brooke Shields as far as i know.

You said everything I wanted to say about Patti's performance, only you did so far more eloquently. I entered Sweeney Todd with absolutely no expectations or preconceived notions about Patti (or the productions) and it absolutely captivated me!
Patti LuPone is terriffic in Sweeney Todd. And for the first time I understood EVERY SINGLE word she said. Those two reasons alone should make her a lock for this award.
Im also over you and your bad taste for theatre.
With the overwhelming support I'm getting on this thread...or ANY thread in which I comment on your taste...I believe it is YOU with the bad taste darling.
Take a quarter and call someone who cares. I'm sure Tamrya's home.
Pathetic is to hide behind a picture of someone else all the time,
This is a theatre message board...not a personals website. As *achem* some may treat it.
While I disagree with muscle on MANY MANY things regarding musical theater, I agree with him that LaChanze should win the Tony this year. As much as I *loved* Sweeney Todd and *loved* Patti LuPone's performance, I just feel like LaChanze's Celie moved me more in the theater. I have a feeling Patti will take it, but LaChanze is the best chance for an upset.
Although I do want LaChanze to take home the Tony, there is no doubt in my mind that Patti gave an amazing performance as Mrs. Lovett. I completely agree with WithoutATrace.
Patti gave a great performance. I think if she wins, she deserves it...her singing was outstanding. LaChanze is my favorite, but i wouldn't be dissappointed if Patti wins the Tony.
WithoutATrace, I agree with you. I have said before that I have never been a big fan of Patti LuPone. But I was impressed with her in Sweeney. I saw Ms. Lansbury on Broadway and was dying to see this production, which is wonderful. But I still go with LaChanze.
