Oh, Lord.
They're engraving Patti's name on it as we speak.
Rooney totally goes above and beyond - doing everything that is asked of him and more - but in a really stupid concept for a role he shouldn't be playing. He has a great voice, but honestly I felt embarrassment shivers a lot of the time he was on stage. I knew there was no way he'd get a Tony nom for playing Lucy.

I agree that Chita's show should have been in the Special Event category, and in her place for Best Actress I would second those who mention Nellie McKay. I know her performance is controversial on this board (and in reviews), but I thought she got the ironic ingenue thing down brilliantly as Polly Peacham. And, at least at the performance I saw, she held the audience spellbound during her solo numbers. Really stole the show, I think, from her very talented co-stars.
The best version of "Unusual Way" is still the OCR by Shelley Burch.
I wonder what the unreleased Streisand version from 1985 sounds like. . .
The Tony will prob go to La Chanze since it is the only category likely to win for Color Purple.

The TONY voters aren't going to give it to LaChanze simply because it's the award TCP has the best shot at. They're giving it to the woman who delivers the best leading performance of the year on Broadway.
That, my dears, is Patti LuPone.
Patti is a loud, vulgar hack.
La Chanze has the sympathy vote.
Patti and Sutton will split and La C will win.
And why the heck was Chita nommed for playing herself in a non-show??
Patti is a loud, vulgar hack.
Tell that to her TONY.
Patti is a vulgar hack?
She can easily out-belt any of the actresses she is against. And she never fails to amaze me how diverse she is. From role to role.
Just way she gives two completely different Lovett's (concert and revival) still amazes me.

This is 2006 not 1956. The TONY does not mean squat anymore. Just look at her paultry film and TV career.
Hate to break it to you - but the amazing legend Gwen Verdon won the leading actress Tony in 1956.
Now that was talent.
Oh, yes.
What was LaChanze's more spectacular performance? Her guest spot on "The Cosby Mysteries" or her voice as one of the Fates in "Hercules"?
TALK ABOUT ILLUSTRIOUS!
While i'm sure Patti is a revelation in the role (I liked her in the concert DVD) LaChanze is a UArts alum....so I gotta cheer for her and that story just moves you like no other and just listening to her singing "I'm Here" has me in tears...I hope she walks away with the prize.

I would love for LaChanze to win, but Patti is, well...Patti.
I mean, Celie is probably my favorite fictional character of all time. She's so AMAZING and strong at the end of the book/movie/musical, and LaChanze understands her and portrays her so well throughout the entire play.
I would definetly replace Chita with Maria Friedman! She was simply glorious in her role and deserves to be recognized.
Also, I really want LaChanze to win this year.... But I won't be mad if Patti wins... or Sutton... or Kelli... Ahh this category is so full of talent this year! But GO LACHANZE!
Although these 5 actresses are very talented, i don't think their performances in these roles were Tony-worthy. LaChanze is the only one that really deserves a nomination, but hey, anything can happen, the entertainment business is not about talent anymore. It's all about business!
Patti LuPone has more talent than most actors and actresses on Broadway can hope to have.
SO...this season has plenty of talent. And her performance as Lovett is MORE than Tony-worthy. To be able to take such a legendary character established by Angela Lansbury and make it your own is no easy feat. Creating an original role is hard...but you have no one's performance to live up to. Re-creating a role of this nature is, in my opinion, much harder. And LuPone did it exquisitely. She deserves this TONY.
I didn't get the fuss with Patti, personally. I'd never seen Sweeney Todd before, and I believe she's completely reinvented the character, but I thought that LaChanze gave a much more convincing performance in The Color Purple - I felt that Patti's character got a bit muddled, and she certainly wasn't the stand out of the production (I preferred Michael Cerveris and Manoel Felciano). LaChanze gives a truly original performance in an incredibly demanding role. I would love love love to see her win this award - and Patti's already got two...enough already.

FOAnatic, LaChanze was a Muse, not a fate. The fates were the ones that cut the strings and killed people.
I have no clue why I know this.
LaChanze was indeed a fate or Moirae
The three Moirae were:
* Lachesis (['lækəsɪs], Greek Λάχεσις — "alotter" or drawer of lots) measured the thread of life with her rod. Her Roman equivalent was Decima (the 'Tenth')
* Clotho (pronounced in English ['kləʊθəʊ], Greek Κλωθώ — "spinner") spun the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle. Her Roman equivalent was Nona, (the 'Ninth'), who was originally a goddess called upon in the ninth month of pregnancy.
* Atropos (['ætrəpɒs], Greek Ἄτροπος — "inexorable" or "inevitable", sometimes called Aisa) was the cutter of the thread of life. She chose the manner of a person's death. When she cut the thread with "her abhorrèd shears", someone on earth died. Her Roman equivalent was Morta ('Death').
The canonical nine Muses are:
* Calliope (epic poetry)
* Euterpe (music)
* Clio (history)
* Erato (lyrics/love poetry)
* Melpomene (tragedy)
* Polyhymnia (sacred poetry)
* Terpsichore (dancing)
* Thalia (comedy)
* Urania (astronomy)

Friedman should have at least been nominated; I haven't seen all the nominated performances, but she gave the best leading performance by a female I've seen this season.
And to whoever said that she shouldn't have been nominated because the show was awful and only lasted a few weeks, that should have nothing to do with a nomination for Friedman. The category is "Best performance by a leading actress in a musical." Other problems with the show unrelated to Friedman's performance shouldn't affect her chances.
Friedman was indeed the best actress of the season, and i have seen all the nominated actresses. No one came even close to her. How did Patti Lupone made the role her own? Oh yeah, she made the role of Mrs. Lovett slutty? please. I agree that Patti is extremely talented, she is one of my favorite singers, her Evita was just amazing. But the truth is, that if any unknown actress would be playing Mrs Lovett the same way Patti is doing it, people would say she is trashy. Angela Lansbury was classier. Although Lupone is a better singer i think.
