Fun fact! Just 11 days after the opening of Forum, another musical comedy set in Rome opened on Broadway in the same year! This (much lesser known) musical is called Bravo Giovanni, and it’s about a family owned Italian restaurant trying to stay afloat when a competing chain restaurant opens across the street. It opened to little fanfare and mixed reviews, and it closed after only 76 performances. The main critique of the show was its score, and the New York Times concluded that the songs “do not rise above the level of the routine musical.” But it somehow managed to get a nomination over Forum in the category of Best Score!

I can agree with this to a point. I am sure someone can, and will, correct me if I am wrong on this but there are kind of two bodies of voters for the Tonys. The smaller nominating committee and then the large group of voters. Regarding my comment on Caroline or Change, I think the musical was snubbed by the voters, not the nominating committee (And we pretty much know what happened that year). As far as Pinkins, I will say that she probably was not snubbed. I think a lot of people thought votes were split between her and Chenoweth which gave Menzel the win.

Whether a show or performance is snubbed ultimately comes down to personal preference (which we all know). I saw Caroline three times (the original production, the revival, and at the Guthrie). I was bored all three times, and went back the second and third time only because people on this board think it is a masterpiece, and I keep thinking I am going to get it this time if I see it again. I have officially given up. So, to me, it wasn’t snubbed. To me, there was something better than it."

But you,as far as I know, are not a Tony voter. If you knew what happened that year you may know that it wasn't "personal preference".

For me, I will be upset with this until I die, the biggest snub is Mary Poppins losing choreography to Spring Awakening. That was insane I will never get over that!

Alex Newell not even getting nominated for Once On This Island was crazy to me and blew me away more than their performance in Shucked... which still floored me.

Savion Glover's choreography for Shuffle Along over Blankenbuehler's for Hamilton

The biggest snub was The Lightning Thief - granted it was a strange year but it was the only new original musical and was not nominated for best score. Instead, five(!)  plays were nominated! This is not a comment on quality of the music of the six shows - but the Tonys went out of their way to not nominate Lightning Thief for anything!

I know it was a stacked year both times, and I don't think it was the biggest snub ever, but I wish Lesli Margherita had gotten a nomination for Matilda or Dames At Sea. I know she works a ton regionally, but would love her back on Broadway.

I don't find this a snub in the least. Rewatch Hamilton on Disney+ or something. That show had phenomenal  choreography!

Although I don't object to the broader usage of the word snub in this thread, this really is a perfect example of its more specific meaning as an intentional slight.

I don't see how a piece of garbage is 'snubbed' because it didn't get nominated, despite having no competition.  I know that there have been a lot of underserved Tony nominations, but that doesn't mean that they should lower the bar even further.  To me, it would have been embarrassing, had it been nominated.

Matilda is a very special show to me for personal reasons so I am very biased to it but this x 1000.

From things I heard from people who saw the show more than once, her performance got stronger and significantly improved over time. I heard from multiple people via various sources who said things along the lines of “She was good the first time but she was AMAZING the second time”. So I can’t help but wonder if the outcome would’ve been different had the nominating committee simply seen her later in the run. I only saw the show once less than 2 weeks before it closed (after the Tonys of course), so I can’t speak to her performance and character growth over time, but it was one of my favorite performances I’ve seen hands down. (As was her performance in The Band’s Visit from a few years before).

I will say that seeing her only once, which was about 2-3 weeks after opening, I thought she was absolutely awful, both vocally and with her interpretation of the character (and I say that as someone who absolutely loved her in Band's Visit). So given the Tony voters saw her around that same time, I completely understand how she was not nominated. I think it's wonderful that per lots of folks she improved so much throughout the run. But as far as Tonys, they're supposed to judge based on the performance they see when the show opens, so it makes a lot of sense why she didn't get in.

I understand why you'd say that and I can't fully disagree but there really are some times when it feels frankly bizarre for a production or an actor to not have won for something

Another that I'm less passionate about is Brent Carver for Parade

I think that Brent Carver in Parade might be one of the best performances ever on a Broadway stage and I hear people regularly saying they like Ben Platt in the role better and it really makes me think

bwayphreak234 said: "Matilda losing to Kinky Boots is something I will never get over until the day I die."

This is one I have a lot to say about

So I'm conflicted

I do like Kinky Boots a good deal and I acknowledge its importance

But Matilda is one of my favorite musicals and Tim Minchin really is a genius

Honestly I would've redistributed the awards a bit

Keep in mind that I'm biased to different parts of both shows because Harvey Fierstein is one of my favorite writers and performers on Broadway (and for that matter I think he deserved a nomination for at least a Drama Desk Award for his performance in A Catered Affair)

But I would've given Matilda Best Musical and Best Score

And Kinky Boots Best Book

I mean actually I have trouble saying that

I'm conflicted on which one should take Best Book.

And even more than that--

Billy Porter verses Bertie Carvel

I really have no idea who I would give the award between these two

I think Bertie Carvel as The Trunchbull is the best drag role on Broadway since Harvey Fierstein as Edna

Probably the only one since then that manages to not only be a convincing portrayal of the opposite sex while also being an actual genuine performance with so much behind it

Matilda is similar to Hairspray for me in a lot of ways, actually

It tells a lot of stories in many ways, the protagonist manages to not be an everyman and yet still be extremely relatable, and they both have show stealing drag roles that different sources fight over whether they're even lead roles

I mean I think that Matilda deserved almost every award for the whole season

But I also appreciate that Kinky Boots won some

But man imagine Tim Minchin's career now if he'd won that Tony Award

I really think Groundhog Day would've been more of a success then

And I think that it'd totally change the course of Broadway for a while there

Sorry for this long message but I just had so much to say about it

Also to be clear I don't think that Kinky Boots didn't deserve the Tony Award or anything

What I really mean is that I just like Matilda better and I feel like Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly would've benefited more from a Tony than Cindy Lauper andHarvey Fierstein just because those two are already super famous and have long successful careers
"

I heard that Tony voters thought Bertie should’ve been in best supporting for Trunchbull and he would’ve won handily had he been.
