technically it's Liam in Jamie Bell's role since Jamie Bell originated the role and Liam is just following in Mr. Bell's footsteps.
Ms. Walters was very good, but i don't think she was as good as everyone said. Mr. Bell is superb (and if any of the three boys are as good as him they are lucky). I enjoyed Gary Lewis's preformance as Billy's father a lot. he is brilliant and Jamie Draven's Tony is so great! a well played role. As well as Stuart Wells' Michael.
the music in the picture is perfect, Mr. Daldry's direction is stunning...
i guess i just can't say enough good things about this movie!

Nobody can ever BETTER Jamie Bell's performance, as he is the original Billy. To a certain degree, every West End Billy will always be copying or trying to redefine Jamie's performance.
I first came to watch the show having seen the film about 50 times and was prepared to be disappointed. Jamie gives such an innocent and beautiful performance as Billy, it would be hard to compare.
However, even as such a cynic, when I saw BE at the VP for the first time, I was blown away (and it was James LM/MF so eat your words. The musical doesn't and could never compare to the film. They are both fantastic but completely different. My advice is; if people LIKED the film, they will LOVE the show. Just don't make comparisons.
Incidentally, if our arch enemy (whether he's LM or MF at the moment - I'm not sure he knows himself) was such a Billy fan, surely he would know that Joe Caffrey plays Tony in the show, Stuart Wells was the original Michael with Nichola Blackwell as the "do ya wanna see me fanny" Debbie, and who (if they care about BE at all) wouldn't know that Ann Emery (long live Rentaghost) plays Grandma.
And finally, as for the Liam Mower Appreciation Society (otherwise known as LM or MF), your ideal cast wouldn't work as Stuart Wells is 23 - in the film he was almost 18 when he played Michael. Not only that, he's in the army, but even he couldn't get away with it now.)

Jamie Bell was fantastic in the film...however all those scenes could be worked on for days, were cut...re-cut etc. The boys at the theatre get just one chance each show. It has to be right, and they have to sustain it throughout, which I understand is pretty exhausting, also they have great singing voices.Any info on the newest Billy?

p.s. Has anyone actually watched the photo that Michael takes of Billy at the beginning of express yourself to see if it actually develops? I keep forgetting to watch it - the routine is so captivating.
I've got tickets ordered for 12/3 both matinee and evening from Seetickets, but they haven't arrived yet. If I check the progress of my order on their website, I get the message "Waiting for these tickets to arrive in stock"
Jamie will always be Billy Elliot. He is the original and broke the mould. The number of youngsters now doing dance has increased rapidly due to the film and his performance. In the future, hopefully, more kids will get to fulfil their dreams because of James, George, Liam and Leon's performances. As with anything else though comparisons are odious and you are never comparing like with like. Jamie is an actor that can dance, James, George, Liam and Leon all have their own strengths though not one of them is in the same league as Jamie for their acting. That's not to say they never will be as they all get better and better with time.
The same goes for all the other parts. Julie's part in the film is not the same as Haydn's in the musical. Michael is completely different in the musical and the support characters are much more developed in the musical. The balance of the musical is also completely different to the balance of the film. The film followed Billy's story all the way as it had to or people would have seen it as disjointed. The musical develops the community more and is able to as numbers like "Solidarity" can show Billy's developing ballet talent as well as miners picket lines all at the same time, something that was not possible in the film.
The simple fact is that this musical wouldn't exist without Jamie Bells portrayal in the original film. As per usual Stephen Daldry and others found the perfect person to play the part at that time. Who would have known that a low cost British film on such an unusual topic could have done so well.
All great things must come to pass. We know the first will soon be last and in the ground we may be lain , but a seed is sown to rise again.
Thanks to the person who provided the small snippet of info about stuart (or is it George? I think he's credited as both) in a previous post, I've been trawling the net trying to find information about him and what he's up to now and have come up with very little, one question, was he really nearly 18 when he played Michael? He looked and sounded very much younger! Thanks again!
Having never seen the film I can't really comment on this, I have it on dvd as during the preview shows of the musical they were giving the dvd's out free to everyone, I might watch it when I've finished going to the musical version but at the present time I don't feel inclined to watch it.
If you wish to know the details of the film, visit www.imdb.com That is my favourite website for films, and short documentary. If anybody can supply them with the birth date of James and George (they haven't got the birth date there), it would be great. Liam's birth date already appeared there : 13 may 1992.
Just type in search (the top one) "Billy Elliot". And a list of films and short documentaries will appear.

I cannot say for sure if Stuart Wells is still actively serving in the army or has been demobbed, but he decided to give up acting after BE to sign up.
Interestingly though, he made a film in 2003 called The Reckoning, under the name of George Wells, so maybe he has left the army now and has returned to acting, but under a different name so he can shake of the gay cross-dresser from Billy Elliot image.
I have a copy of an 'Evening Standard'(London based paper) article of May this year which quotes Liam as saying that he hoped he would be picked to perform on Friday May 13th as it was his birthday and it would absolutely brilliant so I had taken that date as accurate. I bow however to your more detailed knowledge as he might have been misquoted.
